Position Description:
DEFINITION:
Under the general direction of the Associate Dean for Advising, Career, and Student Success, the METAS Advising Generalist supports the Mentorship and Equity in Transitions to Achieve Student Success (METAS) program by providing afternoon and evening academic advising and retention services focused on non-traditional students who have taken time off from their education, particularly those who have completed some college but have not earned a degree, and working adults who are not able to access day-time support services. The Advising Generalist will be part of a student support services team that will provide integrated evening and online support services to meet the needs of reentry students (+25 years or older), student parents, veterans and other non-traditional students. The METAS Advising Generalist will utilize an understanding of CSU and CSUMB degree requirements and policies, course transferability from other institutions to recommend pathways to degree completion that align with the complex schedules and time constraints of non-traditional students.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. (75%) Applies comprehensive understanding of CSUMB and CSU degree requirements, majors, curricular offerings, transfer agreements, programs, and services to develop educational and comprehensive support plans for re-entry students, working adults, and other non-traditional students. Adapts recommendations to complex student situations, and uses judgment to recommend best course of action when difficult situations arise, and consults with other staff or departments as needed. 2. (15%) Using knowledge and experience of holistic academic and career advising, formulates and proposes improved practices to support re-entry and other non-traditional students. Collaborates with other student services and support programs to support the enrollment and success of re-entry and other non-traditional students. Analyzes and recommends changes to ensure delivery of high quality, comprehensive advising and support for students pursuing degrees predominantly in the evening or online. 3. (10%) Works with other campus units and departments to orient and enroll new and continuing students to the campus. Prepares and delivers advising presentations and workshops to inform students about advising and career related services and programs, advising processes and outcomes, campus services and resources. Participate in occasional weekend recruitment and orientation events

Other Functions:
1. Promote and maintain an atmosphere of excellent internal and external customer service, with respect for all students and the belief that all students can succeed at CSUMB with appropriate support. 2. Performs other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:
Position requires working at a computer for extended periods of time. Requires working from home during campus remote operations, with all trainings, meetings, and delivery of services via phone or videoconference on a computer provided by the university/university corporation. During standard campus operations, will require on-campus work in standard office environment in the Advising Center or Transfer Center.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior and individual advising/counseling techniques. General knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of academic and retention advising as well as knowledge of CSU policies. Working knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire knowledge, of CSUMB policies, degree requirements, majors, and transfer agreements. General knowledge of other student services and programs.

Ability to analyze complex situations accurately, with excellent attention to detail, and adopt effective courses of action; advise students individually and in groups on complex student‐ related matters; determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of a sensitive nature; interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.


Minimum Qualifications:
Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience, with at least one year in academic, career, or retention advising. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.


Specialized Skills:
● Work hours will be afternoons and evenings, with occasional Saturday events such as New Student Orientation, Open House, and Admitted Student Day.

● During campus remote operations, requires internet access during work hours (afternoon and evenings).


Preferred Qualifications:
A master’s degree in a related field. Working knowledge and understanding of CSU and CSUMB academic and financial aid policies and graduation requirements, transfer agreements. Knowledge and experience implementing best practices to improve access and retention of non-traditional students, including re-entry students, working adults, students with children, particularly low-income and first-generation students. Experience developing and evaluating new programs, and implementing long-range program improvements. Strong intercultural oral and written communication skills, demonstrated ability to prioritize, multitask, and follow through under general rather than direct supervision,

Working knowledge of student information systems such as CMS/PeopleSoft. Experience and competence with spreadsheets, website maintenance, online case management systems, and standard software such including both Microsoft Office programs and Google Suite, and expertise in videoconferencing software.

Compensation and Benefits:
The University Corporation is committed to providing our employees with a comprehensive program that rewards efforts that are appreciated by your colleagues, students, and the customers we serve. The salary range for this position is $5,200 - 6,000 per month, dependent upon experience. This is an exempt position and as such is not eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, and life insurance benefits, contributory retirement plan, TSA, 13 paid holidays per year and other benefits. University Corporation positions are at will employment.
