The University of Iowa Controller serves as the principal deputy to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), representing the CFO as necessary, and contributes to several cross-functional initiatives to enhance the delivery of financial services across the University. These initiatives involve collaborations with other areas that report to the: Senior VP Finance, Executive Vice President and Provost, Information Technology Services, Director of Financial Management & Budget, University Human Resources Office, UI Health Care and with collegiate and auxiliary unit business officers. This position is considered essential for the effective long-term operation of the university. The University of Iowa Controller oversees seven financial units and supervises nine direct reports and indirectly oversees forty-seven full-time staff and manages an annual budget of $4.8 million. In addition, University Payroll and Workforce Operations is co-managed with the Chief HR Officer with a staff of sixteen and budget of approximately $1.5 million.  This position is intended to work closely with the Chief Financial Officer over the next several years for succession planning and business continuity.

 

Specific Job Duties Include:

 

  • Provide overall leadership and management to the Financial Services team by supervising and providing guidance to direct reports and their staffs responsible for the Offices of: Accounting & Financial Reporting, Capital Asset Management, Capital Project Accounting, Financial Analysis, Grant, Contract & Gift Accounting, University Tax Office.
  • Work in coordination with Chief HR Officer through a dual reporting relationship with University Payroll and Workforce Operations. 
  • Serve as the chief accounting officer. Maintain a system of financial controls necessary to safeguard University resources.
  • Participate actively and provide expert assistance in the strategic development and operation of the University's financial information systems.
  • Oversee the preparation of the University's Annual Financial Report and other financial presentations as needed.

Qualifications:

 

Required:

  • A Master's degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in accounting or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
  • Progressive experience (typically minimum of 10 years) in accounting and related business administration.
  • Demonstrated leadership, supervisory skills, and insight to lead a dynamic and talented staff.
  • Working knowledge of GASB standards and GAAP accounting principles.
  • Strong communication and coalition building skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • Strong proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

 

Desired:

  • Extensive knowledge of accounting theory and information systems associated with an advanced degree or CPA/CMA.
  • Experience in the development, implementation, and ongoing utilization of automated financial systems.
  • Experience with the operation of a major comprehensive research University
  • Experience with federal/state tax, payroll and research regulations.
