Position Summary:

This position provides specialized technical support to the daily operational needs in all small animal surgical areas of University of Wisconsin Veterinary Care (UWVC). The position requires initiative to independently follow through with technical responsibilities. Requires the ability to lift a minimum of 50lbs. independently and physical and manual dexterity to perform specialized technical tasks. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

1. Oversees daily receiving schedules, provides assistance and initiates changes as needed.
2. Anticipates needs of clinicians, staff and students during procedures and in primary animal care.
3. Assists in the instruction of professional veterinary students and training of entry level Veterinary Technicians as requested.
4. Provides pre-operative patient preparation and positioning and assures aseptic technique during procedures.
5. Assures high quality nursing care is administered and maintained in primary care of animal patients.
6. Monitors veterinary student participation in daily operating schedules, initiates changes and lends assistance when needed.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Certification as Wisconsin Veterinary Technician Required.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Experience with surgical assisting in operating rooms. Certification as a CVT required. Surgical nursing skills for pre- and post-operative patients strongly encouraged. Excellent communication skills required.

This position is posted at Vet Tech levels 2 and 3. Level is determined by qualifications based on type of prior veterinary tech experience.

To qualify for Level 2: Generally over 2 years of veterinary tech experience, may substitute years of experience for specialization.

To qualify for Level 3: Veterinary Tech Specialist (VTS), or highly qualified and specialized in a specific area, may have prior experience from another university hospital.
