Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

VCU office of Research seeks to hire a full-time Research Liaison Specialist for Animal Care & Use Program. The Specialist will be responsible for completing the following tasks:

Manage the Post Approval Compliance Monitoring program for animal research activities of IACUC approved protocols by conducting lab visits, implementing and educating ACUP policies and guidelines, and reporting findings to the IACUC to ensure compliance. Coordinate and conduct semi-annual monitoring and follow-up on all protocols involving surgical manipulations required by PHS Policy and USDA species or protocols requiring particular attention. Serve as an IACUC members to pre-review all protocols submissions and provide investigators feedback to improve their protocol forms submission. Participate in the IACUC / ACUP related activities, such as, IACUC semiannual facility inspection, follow-up findings and subcommittee program reviews assigned by the Director. Serve as an educational resource for investigators, research staff, ad IACUC members. Develop a systematic quality assurance and improvement post approval monitoring program by tracking inspection findings and monitoring trends. Participate in the USDA inspection and AAALAC re accreditation site visit as well as assist the Director with special projects. The main purpose of this position is to organize and implement a program of post-approval compliance monitoring of protocols approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee ( IACUC ).

Minimum Hiring Standards

minimum qualifications for this position include:

Bachelor’s degree in Science or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Must have experience, advanced knowledge and extensive skills in humanely handling animals, recognizing signs of disease and distress in laboratory animals.
Experience in developing and managing educational and compliance programs related to animal research.
The candidate should have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU .
Extensive knowledge of USDA and PHS regulations and AAALAC accreditation.
Must possess skills and experience in dealing with a variety of educational backgrounds as well as dealing with sensitive and confidential issues in a discrete manner.

Preferred Hiring Standards

preferred qualifications for this position include:
Extensive experience with laboratory animal research: an advanced animal research technician or veterinary technician are preferred.
Veterinary Technician Certification or Certified Professional IACUC Administration ( CPIA ) is desired.
Familiarity with the “Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.” AAALAS laboratory Animal Technician or higher certification is also preferred.
A two-year veterinary technology program from an accredited college or university or bachelor’s degree in biological science with several years work experience in a laboratory animal facility preferred.
