Overview

Saint Mary's College seeks to hire an Internship Coordinator for the undergraduate Kinesiology program and in the Graduate Kinesiology program.

The Coordinator meets with student interns as a group two to three times during the semester, and one-on-one with students regularly. Students complete coursework using the College's on-line learning management system (Moodle) as well as a predetermined number of hours at their internship placement site.

The Kinesiology major is a four-year course of study leading to either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science depending on the student's area of interest. The major requires rigorous study of the human being in motion. We examine the whole person—anatomically, physiologically, biomechanically, psychologically, sociologically, and historically—across the lifespan. Our domains are health, sport, and physical activity. Students select one area within which to study: Sport and Recreation Management (Bachelor of Arts), Health Promotion (Bachelor of Arts), or Exercise Science (Bachelor of Science).

The Master of Arts in Kinesiology program at Saint Mary's College focuses on the study of human beings engaged in physical activity. It is designed to ensure that graduate students are exposed to the breadth and depth of classical and contemporary knowledge in the component areas of the field while taking advantage of the finest things about Saint Mary's College (e.g., an interest in the student as a person and an emphasis on shared inquiry and critical thinking). Students select a concentration that fits best with their personal and professional goals: Sport Studies, Sport Management, or Fitness Management, and complete the program in 14 to 26 months.

Responsibilities

Internships provide students the opportunity to complete fieldwork in an area of interest that is in line with the department's mission and student's professional interests. They require students to directly apply the knowledge acquired in the academic classroom within the appropriate professional setting. Through this application students are then able to develop new practical skills based on their existing theoretical framework. They are also able to identify personal strengths that will ultimately guide them into specialized fields within the profession such as marketing, media relations, recreation management, strength and conditioning, etc. Finally, internships provide students the opportunity to enhance the professional network so essential for access to and movement within the Kinesiology professions.

Upon completion of their internships, students will be able to: Evaluate probable career paths; Describe the qualifications, specific job requirements, and working conditions for the positions in their career path; Compare knowledge learned in the classroom to its application in the field; Understand the need for flexibility and creativity in the application of knowledge; Initiate the development of a personal, professional network; Apply basic concepts to appropriate problems in the work setting; and Develop a better understanding of the work ethic and skills required for success in the field.

The individual hired to serve as Internship Coordinator is also responsible for helping students enroll in the appropriate corresponding internship course sections through an online petition process.


Qualifications:
The successful candidate will hold a terminal degree in Kinesiology or a closely related field and have a recent publication record in the field, or a Master’s degree in Kinesiology or a closely related field and have at least five years of current, relevant professional experience. Demonstrated teaching effectiveness at the undergraduate and graduate level as evidenced by recent course evaluations is strongly preferred as is the ability to teach a course in a hybrid format. Candidates should be comfortable supporting and working in a multi-cultural environment.
