The Engineering Innovation Manager is a full-time position in the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and is responsible for consulting with small businesses and entrepreneurs on innovation, product development, and process improvement. The Engineering Innovation Manager is also the SBDC's primary liaison with students and resources for Bucknell's College of Engineering (CoE).

The SBDC values diversity in its workforce and all staff contribute to the center's efforts to reach and engage increasingly diverse clients of our region. The Engineering Innovation Manager reports to the Director of the SBDC.

This position will help engage Bucknell University in critically needed efforts for the safe reopening of businesses impacted by COVID-19 and sustained regional economic recovery. This position is enabled by new funding from the U.S. Small Business Administration through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, as well as continued funding from Pennsylvania's Department of Community and Economic Development. This is a full-time, exempt, benefits eligible position.

Job Duties:
  • Consult with small businesses on product development, technology commercialization, and manufacturing innovation; including design, prototyping, and sourcing.
  • Develop engineering consulting engagements and align outcomes of these services with economic impact measures such as business formation, job creation and retention, and capital formation.
  • Recruit and supervise student interns to provide engineering services; recruit faculty and staff to provide engineering services, and facilitate client engagement in classes and other CoE initiatives.
  • Maintain and monitor detailed records in the SBDC management information system of their consulting activity and of students under their supervision.
  • Collaborate with staff throughout the PA SBDC network to ensure engineering assistance is holistically integrated into and coordinated with other SBDC services.
  • Identify and pursue funding for clients and the SBDC through state programs such as the PA Manufacturing Innovation Program and Ben Franklin Technology Partners, and federal programs such as Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Programs.
  • Coordinate engineering consulting pre-project risk assessment reviews with Bucknell University General Counsel as appropriate.
  • Contribute to Bucknell University's commitment to diversity and inclusiveness.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the SBDC Director.

    Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or in a discipline related to product development
  • Three years of experience in engineering, manufacturing, product development, project management, technology, or a related field
  • Demonstrated ability to manage engineers and/or other technical personnel
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, teamwork, time management, and organizational skills
  • Working knowledge of engineering design software, manufacturing processes, and office productivity software
  • Some in-state travel that requires a valid US driver's license, as well as occasional evening and weekend work to meet center objectives

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Business ownership, startup, or other entrepreneurial experience
  • Experience in grant proposal development and administration
