Manager - Learning Specialist/ Academic Advisor

Position Category: Staff - Full-Time

Summary:
The Athletics department is seeking a Learning Performance Specialist/Academic Advisor. This position performs day-to-day operations of the UVU Athletics Wolverine Mentor Program which provides intensive academic support to assigned student-athletes across all sports, including management of mentor advisors and tutors. Responsibilities will include one-on-one instruction in study skills and learning strategies to identify at-risk student-athletes who are academically unprepared, including students with learning disabilities and/or accommodation needs. Works as a member of the Athletic Advising Team and requires strong communication and frequent collaboration about student-athlete progress and needs while adhering to NCAA Academic regulations and eligibility standards regarding Educating Impacting Disabilities assessment. Responsible for working with assigned teams for NCAA eligibility.

Required Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor’s degree plus at least three years of related experience, OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience related to the Summary of Duties totaling at least seven years.

Requires flexibility in working day to day schedule which can include nights, weekends and holidays.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and Family Educational rights to Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Knowledge of higher education system and advisement of student-athletes, preferably at the NCAA Division I level.
  • Knowledge of and compliance with NCAA, WAC, Big 12 and UVU policies and procedures.
  • Leadership and supervisory skills to supervise part time staff.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Possess effective interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to direct employees in critical work paths to increase academic proficiency.
  • Ability to problem solve with attention to detail being stressed.
  • Ability to review educational evaluations and assess individual learning needs.
  • Ability to interact with individuals from diverse social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds.


Preferred Qualifications:
Masters Degree in Counseling, Advising, Athletic Administration or an associated field. Experience advising at the NCAA Division I level.

Education background with knowledge of and experience with Learning Disabilities and accommodations.


Physical Requirements:
Working in an office environment requiring continuous talking, hearing, seeing and fine hand manipulation for computer use. Working in the Athletics division requires walking, standing some lifting up to 10 lbs. regularly along with occasional bending, twisting and kneeling.
