Primary Instructor - Immersion Program

Instructors for UChicago Summer Session 2021 precollege Immersion courses are desired in the following subject areas: math, computer science, physics, law, and business.

Primary instructors have full responsibility for teaching a self-designed course in the Immersion program for precollege (academically advanced high school) students, developed in collaboration with the Summer Session Office. These are graded courses designed specifically for academically advanced high school students ready to tackle undergraduate-level material and assignments, and feature both traditional (e.g., lecture, discussion) and experiential (e.g., labs, field trips) learning activities.

Immersion courses are taught in an intensive three-week format, either June 21-July 8 (no classes July 5) or July 13-29, 2021. Usually, these courses meet in-person Monday through Friday, from 9am to 3pm (with a lunch break from 11:30am to 1pm), although please note that circumstances might necessitate moving in-person courses to remote instruction in Summer 2021, so candidates should be ready to shift to that format. There is no reading or exam period for these courses; any final exams or presentations would be given during the last class session. Classes are not held on Independence Day (a University holiday).

Applications will be reviewed by Summer Session staff and be subject to final approval from a faculty representative from the relevant academic department. Applications will be evaluated based on the strength of applicant’s teaching record, previous experience teaching high school aged students, and appropriateness of the course proposal for the intended precollege audience.

Offer contingent on successful completion of a background check. All instructors must also complete mandatory annual training on Minors on Campus Policy compliance.

Responsibilities:

• Planning and executing experiential learning opportunities, such as field trips, guest speakers, labs, field work, and other interactive, creative activities, including arranging any student safety training necessary for lab work (Summer Session Office provides logistical support for matters such as transportation and payment of speaker fees)
• Developing and distributing a syllabus that clearly states the objectives of the course, the requirements that students will be expected to fulfill, and the basis on which they will be graded, in collaboration with the other co-instructor(s), to be filed with the Summer Session Office prior to the start of the quarter
• Preparing all course materials (e.g., ordering books and supplies, including desk copies for teaching assistants; creating the Canvas site) in advance of the beginning of the quarter, in collaboration with other co-instructor(s)
• Daily coordination with teaching assistant(s) for delivery of any additional instruction and assignments, including guidance on lesson planning and activities
• Overseeing the collaboration among any co-instructors and teaching assistant(s) to ensure a coherent, cohesive classroom experience for students throughout the course, including development of the curriculum and syllabus, identification of possible guest speakers and field trip locations, and working with the Summer Session Office on teaching assistant hiring
• Ensuring smooth delivery of course content by all guest speakers, including securing substitutes when necessary
• Adhering to and announcing the University's and Summer Session Office’s policies on grading, attendance, class participation, and academic misconduct
• Preparing for and meeting all scheduled class sessions (including chaperoning field trips)
• Maintaining regular office hours (one to two hours per week)
• Grading and commenting on papers, examinations, and other assignments in a timely manner and submitting final quarter grades by the Registrar's published deadline
• Participating in any meetings organized by the Summer Session Office
• Consulting on student course placement, as necessary
• Bringing to the attention of Summer Session staff any matters related to student attendance, progress, or other areas of concern
• Completion of mandatory annual training on Minors on Campus Policy compliance

Required skills and abilities:

• Documented excellence in pedagogy and course content
• Willingness to learn and adhere to Summer Session and UChicago policies

Experience and education:

• Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree, J.D., or Ph.D. preferred
• Prior teaching experience at the university or four-year college level required
• Previous experience working with high school students or in an intensive summer program preferred, but not required
• Graduate student candidates may be a current PhD student or recent alumna/e
