Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Viola

Appointment: Tenure-Track Appointment, beginning Fall 2021

Position Requirements: Doctor of Musical Arts or equivalent professional experience. Experience teaching applied viola and chamber music at the university level. Record of professional activity and research that demonstrates emerging or established national/international recognition in the field of viola performance is paramount. Expert knowledge of current practice and pedagogy in viola with a vision towards future developments. Candidate will continue professional research that is relevant to the current and future practice of music.  Commitment to quality, student-centered education and working as a team member. A demonstrated and ongoing commitment to serving diverse student populations, and strong evidence of the ability and desire to perform service: duties include, but are not limited to; recruiting, program-building, and commitment to extra-curricular activities in the department, college, the university, and the community.

Preferred Qualifications: 

Superior skills in the area of viola performance, experience teaching applied one-on-one lessons in viola, and an active record of national and international performance experience. Experience working with diverse student populations and first-generation students. The ability to form partnerships within and outside of the university, regionally, nationally, and internationally.  The ideal candidate will have superior classical viola performance ability, as well as an active record of scholarship/practice that includes community engagement and/or collaboration. Familiarity with current and cutting-edge practices in viola curricula.

Position Description:

 The successful candidate will:

• Demonstrate ability to teach applied lessons in viola performance and chamber music at graduate and undergraduate levels.
• Continue to engage in nationally/internationally recognized creative/professional practice and/or scholarship.
• Have evidence of significant performance experience and possess (or have the promise to develop) a national and/or international reputation as a performer.
• Demonstrate ability to recruit exceptional students to the School of Music.
• Work well with colleagues within and outside the School, as well as in building interdisciplinary collaborations.
• Regularly attend student performances and recitals and responsibly mentor students toward on-time degree completion.
• Embrace new forms of critically engaged disciplinary practice/scholarship in the evolving field of music. Seek opportunities to teach broadly across the music curriculum and envision new ways to expand beyond it.
• As a collaborative departmental citizen, actively participate in departmental, college and university service, including committee work and academic support services, such as: auditions and recruitment of students into the program; program review (including implementation and assessment of outcomes); maintaining the string area’s accreditation with NASM; and student advising, supervision of student organizations, and participation in sponsored off-campus activities.
• Where appropriate, demonstrate the potential to bring external funding to the School/College. Pursuit of external grants in support of research or creative activity, when appropriate and available in the faculty members’ field, is encouraged.
