Position

The Department of Teaching and Learning at the University of Iowa invites applications for an academic year clinical-track faculty position at the rank of assistant, associate or full professor in the Art Education program.  The position will begin August 18, 2021.

Description 

This is a full-time academic-year (9 month) clinical track faculty position with an initial three-year appointment.  Renewal is possible, dependent on recurrent funding and performance.  We seek an individual with broad expertise in art education as well as experience with teacher education. The successful applicant will be expected to teach the equivalent of three courses each semester and coordinate the art education program area, including recruiting, advising, and program coordination for undergraduate and graduate students. We seek individuals who are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusivity in education.

Education Requirement

Prospective candidates must have earned a doctorate in Art Education or a related discipline by August 2021.

Required Qualifications

(1)  Experience in art education in K12 settings; (2) strong commitment to working and collaborating with diverse populations; (3) interest in building partnerships with local schools, communities, and across campus.

Desirable Qualifications

(1) Successful experience teaching in K-12 settings; (2) evidence of excellent teaching skills at the undergraduate and graduate level; (3) experience with program coordination and management, and
(4) potential for securing external funds for professional and program development.

Responsibilities

Major responsibilities include the following: instruction in art education; coordination of field experiences; recruiting and advising; participating in grant activities to secure funding for professional and curriculum development. This work includes establishing connections with local school districts as well as departments across the UI campus. In addition, the successful candidate will be involved with local, state, and national activities that support the practice of art education; and participate in service to the program, department, college, and university. Faculty are required to engage in at least 4 hours a semester of collaboration with teachers in contributing to instruction in K12 classrooms.

About the Department and the Program

The Department of Teaching and Learning at the University of Iowa has 40 faculty members and over 800 students. It includes nine teacher education programs and five doctoral programs. The Art Education program has been a thriving part of the academic offerings at the University of Iowa since 1971. Art Education programs in the College of Education prepare artists as teachers of art in elementary schools, middle schools, secondary schools, community settings, and four-year colleges. Graduate (MA and MAT) and undergraduate students are provided with the opportunity to explore and engage with art history, education, community arts, and studio practice. A tradition of community outreach art workshops offers artistic opportunities for K-12 students and provide authentic teaching opportunities for COE art education pre-service teachers. The program also produces scholars in art education and supervisors of art in community settings, museums, state departments of education, and school systems.
