Organizational Unit Overview
East Carolina University, the third largest university in the UNC system, is located in North Carolina’s coastal plain midway between Raleigh and the coast. An institution of over 29,000 students, ECU is a research-intensive university which offers more than 104 Bachelor’s degree programs, 73 Master’s degree programs, 4 Intermediate degree programs, 17 Doctoral programs, and 2 First Professional degree programs (MD, DDS).

The mission of the College of Education is the preparation of professional educators and allied practitioners, including professionals in counseling, electronic media, and librarianship. Significant to this mission is a strong commitment to three important related areas, all of which are realized through partnerships and other endeavors. These areas are: (1) the encouragement and nurturing of professional growth for educators and allied practitioners at all levels and in all areas of the education endeavor; (2) a continuing emphasis on and support for scholarship and research/creative activity; and (3) service in all areas of professional education. Critical to such commitment is the promotion of effective teaching; staff participation in the improvement of schools; and, in concert with other state agencies, the development and creation of educational policy for North Carolina.

Job Duties
The College of Education at East Carolina University invites applications and nominations for the position of Chairperson of the Department of Elementary Education and Middle Grades Education. This is a full-time 12-month position. We are seeking a dynamic and innovative leader with exemplary leadership, administrative, personnel management, and supervisory skills.

Responsibilities include facilitating the development and attainment of departmental goals with a clear vision for the Department’s future. Those responsibilities include but are not limited to: decision-making; negotiating teaching assignments, research, and service loads for faculty; providing leadership on diversity, equity, and social justice so as to foster anti-discriminatory practices and build cultural proficiency across the Department; evaluating faculty and staff; providing leadership to the success of established collaborative partnerships and innovative foresight to the establishment of new partnership opportunities; collaborating with faculty within the department and across the college regarding curricular and related programmatic matters; managing budgets; involved in the hiring process of faculty and staff; and advocating for the Department in college and university issues/context.

Minimum Education/Experience
The candidate must possess a Ph.D. or Ed.D. degree in Elementary or Middle Grades Education or related field. Rank will be Associate or Full Professor with salary commensurate to qualifications. Rank will be commensurate with education and experience. Qualifying degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions and conferred by the time of hire.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated effectiveness in: (1) teaching and overseeing undergraduate and master’s degree programs in elementary education and/or middle grades education; (2) university collaborative efforts with public schools; (3) external grants for research and program development, (4) management of monetary supports of programs, partnerships, scholarships, initiatives, impact, and regional transformation, (5) integration of technology in the instructional process, and, (6) commitment to the CAEP accreditation process.
