General Summary/Purpose

After entry-level training under the general supervision of a faculty investigator or facility supervisor, is responsible for independently maintaining and running multiphoton microscopes and optical imaging equipment for cell imaging and small animal imaging experiments, and with running MRI, Ultrasound, SPECT, CT and PET scanners. Assists researchers that are using the imaging facility to set up their experiments including animal set-up and optimization of the multiphoton microscope, optical imaging equipment, MRI, and PET scanners. Uses sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments. Operates lab computers for data acquisition and data analysis. Monitors inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, counts orders upon receipt. Maintains accurate data records. Helps with administering the user base of the imaging facility.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Maintains and runs multiphoton microscopes and optical imaging equipment for cell imaging and small animal imaging experiments, and with running MRI and PET scanners. Assists researchers that are using the imaging facility to set up their experiments including animal set-up and optimization of the multiphoton microscope, optical imaging equipment, MRI, SPECT-CT and PET scanners. Helps with administering and interacting with the user base of the imaging facility. Operates lab computers for data acquisition and data analysis. Will utilize animal models, mostly rodents, in experiments. Following experimental protocols, monitors animals and maintains health records in accordance with USDA and AALAC guidelines. Sacrifices and dissects animal remains as required. Maintains accurate data records. Complies with biohazard/radiation safety standards through proper handling, regular testing and disposal of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources in the workplace. Completes annual university biohazard/universal precaution/radiation safety training, as appropriate. Uses sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments. Uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens. Monitors inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, counts orders upon receipt.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, chemistry, or related field required.

Preferred Qualifications

Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Must have a working knowledge of one or more of the following disciplines achieved through undergraduate studies, and laboratory experience gained through class work and hands-on experience: microscopy, imaging techniques, small animal (rodent) handling and procedures such as tail-vein injections and catheterization, biology, biochemistry. Additional relevant laboratory experience acquired through extracurricular activities or summer employment is very desirable, in particular in the fields of multiphoton microscopy, optical imaging, MRI, SPECT-CT and PET.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
