General Summary/Purpose:

This Research Data Analyst will support research and policy guidance of optimal targeting of oral cholera vaccination campaigns.

Gavi and the WHO-led Global Task Force on Cholera Control (GTFCC) are working to establish criteria for determining what populations may be eligible to receive oral cholera vaccines (OCV) for preventive mass vaccination campaigns through Gavi. Given that the global supply of cholera vaccine is severely limited, and risk of cholera is not evenly distributed across populations, targeted vaccination campaigns focused on those most at risk are recommended. Clear guidance is needed both for countries and Gavi to ensure OCV is being used in an efficient and equitable manner. In parallel effort, the Vaccine Impact Modelling Consortium is seeking to estimate cholera burden and model the potential impact of global campaigns of oral cholera vaccination. The Disease Dynamics Group seeks a motivated research data analyst to help with these projects over the next year.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Conduct analyses on historical cholera data to explore the implications of different OCV prioritization schemes on global vaccine use and public health impact.
  • Adapt an existing cholera vaccination model into an R package and produce estimates of vaccine impact according to VIMC scenarios and guidelines
  • In collaboration with WHO, CDC, Gavi and the GTFCC, develop policy guidance on OCV prioritization
  • Work with Ministries of Health in 2-3 select countries to assist with their assessment of historical cholera risk and prioritization of cholera control areas (30-40% travel, COVID-19 restrictions permitting)
  • Based on country cholera control priorities, help countries use the proposed OCV prioritization guidance to select target populations for vaccination

The Research Data Analyst may also engage in additional research related to cholera and OCV with a large and collaborative“cholera dynamics” team in the Infectious Disease Dynamics group at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. This work will be in direct collaboration with Elizabeth Lee, Andrew Azman and Justin Lessler.
