Feminist/Queer Approaches to Race

The Department of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) at Emory University is seeking applications from scholars engaged in feminist/queer studies of race with attention to histories or legacies of race, broadly conceived. The position is open rank. We are seeking a colleague with expertise in history and/or the social sciences and who has a critical, interdisciplinary orientation to the study of race, gender and/or sexuality. We are open to a variety of interdisciplinary historical and/or social sciences-based methodological approaches. These can include but are not limited to methods that draw upon archives and other primary documents, oral histories and other types of interviews, ethnographies and other types of fieldwork or participant observation, quantitative and qualitative data. All applicants must demonstrate their commitment to teaching and mentoring a diverse student body, undergraduate and graduate. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in WGSS or a relevant discipline/field.

Our needs for faculty growth in this area align with the new strategic plans outlined by both Emory College (ECAS Strategic Plan) and Emory University (One Emory). This search will complement a number of recent hires and Emory’s growing distinction in studies of race, inequality, and social justice across its numerous schools, disciplines, institutes, and programs. Emory faculty and students have direct access to a wealth of expanding intellectual resources in these areas, including the extraordinary special collections of the Stuart A. Rose Library and the vibrant programs of the James Weldon Johnson Institute for the Study of Race and Difference. The Emory WGSS Department is home to the first WGSS PhD program in the U.S. and continues to attract, mentor, and place many of the most innovative leaders in the field.
