General Summary/Purpose

The Department of Environmental Health and Engineering (EHE) is seeking a Research & Teaching Laboratory Coordinator to manage, maintain and assist with setting up their departmental teaching and research laboratories. The individual must exercise independent judgment, possess strong organizational skills, and adequate data acquisition/analysis skills. The primary duties and responsibilities of the Research & Teaching Laboratory Coordinator include: (a) maintaining analytical instrumentation (e.g., GCs, AA, UV/Vis spectrophotometers, ion chromatograph, TOC, autoclave), (b) setup of teaching laboratories at the start of the semester and restore the facilities at the end of the semester, (c) collaborate with faculty and students in designing and implementing research and teaching projects, (d) purchase equipment and supplies from vendors as needed, (e) promote safe practices and ensure that all rules and safety regulations are maintained and followed, and (f) contribute to long-range planning and design of departmental teaching and research laboratory facilities.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Undergraduate and Graduate Teaching Laboratories

Equipment and Supplies

  • Assist with testing out experiments to be conducted and make suggestions for improving experimental procedures.
  • Maintain records of expendables required by each laboratory course.
  • Maintain an electronic database inventory of all tagged equipment and instruments, and coordinate with Fixed Assets Shared Service Center for updates.
  • Maintain an electronic database inventory of chemicals (Quartzy) in teaching laboratories.
  • Order all supplies required for each laboratory course prior to the start of each semester.
  • Oversee deliveries of lab material and supply orders assuring that all orders are received and properly distributed.
  • Review all laboratory equipment prior to each semester to ensure that it is functioning properly when needed.
  • Participate in the setup of equipment and experiments for upcoming laboratories.
  • Break down and store laboratory equipment and supplies when they are no longer needed for the semester.
  • Schedule and manage maintenance of laboratory equipment as needed.
  • Assist faculty in monitoring and enforcing student adherence to departmental and university policy regarding laboratory practices and procedures.
  • Manage any necessary moving and off-campus storage of equipment such as HSE clearance, fill out disposal/transfer forms.
  • Manage and maintain the EHE Labs website, and Google Calendars of the lab access.

Facilities

  • Prepare laboratory facilities as needed prior to the start of each semester.
  • Reset laboratory facilities as needed at the end of each semester.
  • Manage and follow up on all necessary facility repairs.
  • Work with JHU operations and facilities as needed to address all laboratory facility issues in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for helping to oversee the operations of the building and communicating with Whiting School of Engineering (WSE) facility managers on issues that could affect the performance of the EHE laboratories.
  • Assist with the maintenance of the WSE space reporting system for our laboratory facilities.
  • Attend quarterly Lab Coordinator’s meeting.

Budgetary

  • Purchase equipment and supplies directly from vendors as needed.
  • Maintain detailed records of purchases and other teaching and research laboratory expenditures.
  • Provide monthly budget reports, including itemized purchases for each lab, to EHE administration. If a procurement card (PCard) is used for purchase of supplies and materials, the receipts and packing slips must be collected and uploaded to EHE’s shared drive on a monthly basis.
  • Assist in developing annual laboratory budget, write capital request proposal, including expected equipment maintenance and repair costs.
  • Maintain records for the weekly lab coat order, and make payments weekly using the Pcard.

Research Laboratories

  • Schedule and manage maintenance of laboratory equipment (e.g., GCs, TOC, AA, UV/Vis Spectrometers, ion chromatography, autoclave) as needed.
  • Instruct students and faculty on general laboratory procedures as needed for the EHE research laboratories.
  • Assist students and faculty in the purchase of laboratory equipment and supplies.
  • Review all research laboratory facilities prior to scheduled safety audits and alert faculty of any safety issues which require attention.
  • Assist faculty in working with JHU operations and facilities as needed to address research laboratory facility issues.
  • Assist faculty in monitoring and enforcing student adherence to departmental and university policy regarding laboratory practices and procedures.
  • Contribute to long-range planning and design of departmental laboratory facilities.
  • Maintain an electronic database inventory of all tagged equipment and instrumentation, and coordinate with Fixed Assets Shared Service Center for updates.
  • Provide and/or coordinate training for students using the laboratory facilities.
  • Assist with the development of lab training materials.
  • Request training as needed to ensure that all duties and responsibilities can be met.

Safety

  • Promote safe practices and ensure that all rules and safety regulations are maintained and followed.
  • Review all new equipment and experiments for potential safety issues.
  • Review all laboratory facilities prior to scheduled safety audits and alert faculty of any safety issues which require attention.
  • Assist the EHE Safety Coordinator (faculty member) in interfacing with the various safety groups on campus (WSE Safety Office, JHU Safety Office, JHU Security, JHU Department of Health, Safety and Environment).
  • Be available to handle emergency situations (seldom) which may require coming to the building during off hours or resolving issues over the phone.
  • Maintain the biohazardous boxes and bags.
  • Maintain the safety training certificates of students.
  • Check and record eyewash/showers logs in the labs weekly.
  • Dispose expired chemicals and samples with proper tags and submit to waste management for pickup.
  • Maintain training notes for annual in-house safety training.
  • Maintain records of PPEs (disinfectants, rags, etc.), and distribute regularly to the labs.

Instruments and Equipment used on the Job:

  • Must have good familiarity with research-grade instruments used in environmental engineering and science, including proper use, optimization of operating conditions, troubleshooting instrument problems, and conducting appropriate repairs. Example instrumentation includes GCs, AA, UV/Vis spectrophotometers, TOC, ion chromatograph, and autoclave.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent education and training in engineering research and teaching laboratory operations.
  • Three years related experience.
  • Additional experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

* JHU Equivalency Formula:30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *

Preferred Qualifications

MA or MS (or equivalent) preferred;Five+ years of experience in an educational environment or research institute focused on environmental/analytical chemistry or environmental engineering laboratories.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proven comprehensive knowledge of laboratory management and laboratory administration, preferably in a large research and teaching environment.
  • Must have knowledge of fundamentals of analytical chemistry as applied to the solution of problems in environmental engineering and science.
  • Must have good familiarity with research-grade instruments used in environmental engineering and science, including proper use, optimization of operating conditions, troubleshooting instrument problems, and conducting appropriate repairs.
  • Must be able to work independently in assessing when equipment maintenance or repair is required and take initiative in altering existing laboratory protocols to optimize performance.
  • The Research and Teaching Laboratory Coordinator will proactively communicate with key customers such as faculty, staff, students, and vendors to resolve issues and ensure smooth operation of all lab activities in a timely manner.
  • Must have good interpersonal skills to effectively supervise students and interact with faculty.
  • Ability to foster and maintain cooperative interdepartmental working relationships, and to work closely with faculty, staff, students, vendors, and other departmental laboratories.
