Brief statement of duties
The Assistant Professor is a campus-based, tenure-track position open to individuals specializing in phytochemistry, pharmacognosy, natural products, analytical chemistry or plant biochemistry.
The Assistant Professor has an active role in the new Medicinal Plant Chemistry program. Teaching assignments may include the capstone courses in this program (CH420/CH421), the medicinal plant chemistry seminar courses, and other courses dependent on departmental needs. Expectations also include establishing a research program related to some aspect of plant chemistry that would actively involve undergraduates. Appropriate levels of departmental and university service are a part of the position's responsibilities. This is a campus-based position.
The Department of Chemistry has seventeen full-time faculty and offers undergraduate degrees in ACS-certified chemistry, biochemistry, forensic biochemistry, and medicinal plant chemistry. Minimum qualifications:
Required education
Doctorate or equivalent terminal degree
Discipline/degree area
Biochemistry, Chemistry or closely related field
Required specialized training/certifications
Required minimum work experience
Prior teaching experience at the post-secondary level.
Knowledge, skills, abilities or attributes required for satisfactory performance of the position duties
Excellent oral and written communication skills and time management skills.
Commitment to undergraduate education and demonstrated excellence in teaching.
Ability to develop research projects appropriate for NMU and appropriate for undergraduate involvement.
Excellent problem-solving skills and laboratory-diagnostic capabilities.
Ability to work well with instructional team, including but not limited to fellow instructors and laboratory assistants.
Additional desirable qualifications:

Post-doctoral experience.
Teaching experience at the university level.
Interest in and experience with medicinal plants.
Familiarity with modern analytical instrumentation.
Familiarity with production (cultivation, extraction, or purification) of medicinal plant products.
Research interests in secondary plant metabolites.
