The Academic Center for English Language Studies (ACES) Program at St. Joseph’s College, Brooklyn, seeks a full-time Assistant Director to begin in the spring semester of 2021. ACES is an intensive reading and writing Learning Community for high-achieving immigrant and international students for whom English is a new language. ACES provides educational, social and financial assistance as well as professional guidance to the aforementioned population. Through specialized teaching, tutoring, workshops, advising, counseling services, mentoring opportunities and cultural outings, the ACES staff meets the College's mission and goals of providing students a strong academic and values-oriented education that develops the whole person.

 

The Assistant Director plays an integral role in all aspects of ACES. Primary duties include teaching one three-, four-, or five-credit course per semester. These courses include the freshman seminar and the core composition course Writing for Effective Communication. In addition to teaching duties, the candidate works with the director to research and assess program curriculum, train and mentor ACES instructors and tutors, visit and cultivate relationships with feeder high schools, advise students during registration periods and, as an instructor and advisor, identify and intercept cases requiring delicate emotional counseling and refer students to appropriate counseling resources.

 

The ideal candidate will possess common sense, empathy, wisdom, and maturity. At times, the ability to work independently will be valued. A dedication to advocacy for underrepresented and marginalized groups is essential.

Qualifications

Qualifications: Master’s degree in English or related area. Two years of experience teaching English, Composition, or a related field at the undergraduate level. Experience working with ELL students.
