The Department of African, African American, & Diaspora Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks to hire a historian who specializes in American slavery, whose work focuses on the African American experience, and who is able to teach related courses from the colonial period through the Civil War. Of particular interest are candidates whose research and teaching center labor, resistance, gender, community formation, and/or cultural dynamics. The successful candidate will join a department with a range of multidisciplinary strengths in African American Studies, African Studies, and Caribbean and Latin American Studies. The appointment will be at the assistant or associate rank. The individual hired will hold the title of Morehead-Cain Alumni Fellow (assistant professor) or Morehead-Cain Alumni Scholar (associate professor), reflecting the partnership that made the position possible. We especially encourage applications from candidates from diverse backgrounds, as well as individuals whose research and teaching engage issues of diversity and equity. This search is part of a larger hiring initiative focused on themes of race, history, health, and community.
