About the Opportunity:
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering aggressively grows in compute-intense subjects to lead the big-data revolution, the rise of autonomy and the increase of ambient intelligence. It hosts almost 20% of the university research activity. The research at the ECE department has diverse challenging needs new to the university ranging from for centralized heterogeneous high-performance computation, via localized low-latency clusters to massively distributed mobile systems. In addition, the department is growing in terms of faculty and students, which requires optimization of business procedures (such as signature flows, workflows, document management, databases, web services). The department hosts large computer labs, which may be virtualized to increase efficiency and flexibility while reducing maintenance efforts.

Responsibilities:
The Associate Director is responsible to strategically oversee the entire system development life cycle of the ECE department from design and delivery to improvements as delivered to internal stakeholders. In particular, this includes designing an overarching plan to address the computing infrastructure needs of the department balancing performance, equipment and maintenance costs. The role includes strategic leadership, infrastructure architecture and design including financial analysis, and project management. To facilitate the compute-intense research, the Assistant Director is responsible to assist researchers in the planning/dimensioning and acquisition of specialized HPC systems, as well as strategically leading a team to ensure their efficient operation and maintenance. The Assistant Director strategically coordinates with university and college resources to realize department's IT projects efficiently and cost effectively.
Candidate must have proven problem-solving skills and technical skills, a “can do” attitude and the ability to work through challenging situations. Must have the ability to interact with customers. Demonstrated continued professional growth and development. Candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to work on multiple concurrent projects and activities as both a lead and team member. Must show demonstrated initiative to research new technologies and must have the ability to interact with customers. To ensure that essential services are provided to the university community, the employee will be required to work outside their regular working hours as needed.

Qualifications:
Master's Degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science or related discipline is required. Minimum of 5-7 years of IT infrastructure experience required. Five years in a technical management role is a plus. Extensive technical knowledge in analysis, systems development architecture development, hardware and software support needs for both the MAC and PC, Linux environments, educational technology development, web programming and design, application deployment and desktop support services. Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal. Required to relate directly with customers ranging faculty, staff, students, alumni/ae and vendors. Demonstrated leadership in motivating skilled technical systems administrators, architect, and desktop support personnel.
