VICE PROVOST FOR ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT

UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN – ANN ARBOR

The University of Michigan (UM) in Ann Arbor, the public flagship university of the state and one of the world’s preeminent research universities, seeks a Vice Provost for Enrollment Management (VPEM) to provide overarching leadership to the enrollment functions of the university.

For over 200 years, UM has provided an unparalleled educational experience. The university has a rich history of recruiting and developing leaders and citizens who will challenge the present and enrich the future. With stellar faculty in every field, UM delivers an enlightening and transformative academic atmosphere for its students. Demand for a Michigan degree is strong. The university attracts, enrolls, and supports a high-achieving and diverse group of students from every state and around the world. The outstanding academic reputation of UM draws over sixty thousand applications for undergraduate admission each year, and the campus is successful in competing for the most talented and accomplished students. In particular, the University of Michigan was at the forefront of setting tuition guarantee programs such as the Go Blue Guarantee, and is one of the few public institutions in the country that commits to meeting full need for all in-state students.

Building upon this tremendous foundation, the VPEM will continue to improve a sophisticated, strategic, integrated, analytically informed, and collaborative approach to university-wide enrollment. Working closely with the provost, deans, and all campus leadership, the VPEM will help envision the university’s enrollment future, meeting undergraduate enrollment goals with particular attention to strengthening, supporting, retaining and graduating an increasingly diverse student population in compliance with state and federal requirements. To achieve these goals, the VPEM is instrumental in setting financial aid policy for the university and ensuring consistent strategy and communications between admissions and financial aid policy.

Most important, the current pandemic has provided an opportunity for the UM community to reflect on the institution’s impact and to explore how it will continue to fulfill its missions of education, research, public service, and patient care in its third century. There are opportunities to develop and improve a structure that brings increased coordination and cooperation among the schools and colleges so as to best serve students and help ensure student success among all populations at the university, better envision and manage enrollment goals, and increase efficiencies and synergies across these functions.

The VPEM reports to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and serves as a member of the provost’s senior cabinet. The VPEM will lead the Office of Enrollment Management (OEM), a team of five operational units--the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, the Office of Financial Aid, the Office of New Student Programs, the Office of the Registrar, and OEM administration--charged with working across the university to deliver the optimal undergraduate enrollment program for UM. This includes meeting the university’s short- and long-term enrollment goals and working with units to ensure an excellent student experience throughout engagement, from prospect to admission, academic success, and graduation.

An ideal candidate will have a distinguished record of success in enrollment management; possess a demonstrated commitment to the core values of diversity, excellence, and access; have experience with complex budget structures and resource allocation; exhibit superior interpersonal communication skills across varied constituencies; be able to develop and implement strategic vision; display an ability to manage and motivate a diverse professional staff; and understand the nuances of interdivisional collaboration in a highly decentralized institution.

Inquiries, nominations and applications are invited.  Review of applications will begin in November and will continue until the position is filled.  The university has retained Isaacson, Miller, a national executive search firm, to assist with this search. Inquiries and nominations should be sent to umvpem@imsearch.com.  Interested candidates should apply at https://www.imsearch.com/search-detail/S7-681.

The University of Michigan is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer dedicated to the goal of building a culturally diverse and pluralistic university community committed to teaching and working in a multicultural environment. Potential applicants who share this goal are encouraged to apply.
