The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, a division of the University of Virginia, invites applications for the Kathleen Strunk Endowed Chair in Nursing/Chair of the Department of Nursing.

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise (UVA Wise) is a public, four-year residential liberal arts college located in the lush mountains of Southwest Virginia. As a COPLAC member institution, UVA Wise is nationally-accredited and has been nationally-ranked among top public liberal art colleges in the U.S. UVA Wise offers 31 majors, 37 minors, and 17 teaching licensures, and it is home to Virginia’s only undergraduate degree program in software engineering. Established in 1954 as a division of the University of Virginia, it is guided by the values of citizenship and altruism. Proud of its Appalachian heritage, the College continues to honor its commitment of service to Southwest Virginia, the nation, and the world. The College is guided by a legacy of teaching and scholarly excellence and by a dedication to quality in both the arts and sciences and professional programs. Under the leadership of Chancellor Donna P. Henry and her dedicated staff and dynamic faculty, the College enters an exciting new era that includes substantial investments and achievements in undergraduate research, nationally recognized faculty scholarship, and landmark legislation affording in-state tuition to students across the entire Appalachian Regional Commission. Above all, The University of Virginia’s College at Wise is a diverse community of people who believe that information can be transformed into knowledge and that teaching and learning create a foundation for wisdom.

Department of Nursing

The Department of Nursing offers a program of study leading to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (BSN). This program is approved by the Virginia State Board of Nursing and is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The nursing major has two tracks: Pre-Licensure and RN to BSN. Upon completion of the Liberal Arts Core courses and the required nursing courses, the student will have accrued a total of 126 hours (Pre-Licensure) or 120-122 hours (RN to BSN) for graduation. The Pre-Licensure Program is for students who wish to earn a BSN and take the registered nurse licensure examination, the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN). Once admitted to the nursing major, students in the Pre-Licensure Program must enroll full-time.

The RN to BSN Program is a program for registered nurses who have either a diploma or an associate degree in nursing. The RN to BSN Program has been specifically designed for the working registered nurse student. The courses in the RN-BSN major are all online. The optional minor in Leadership Studies will provide the registered nurse with the skills and knowledge necessary for coordinating and managing patient care in complex health situations in health care facilities and in the community. The curriculum is also intended to prepare the registered nurse for graduate studies for advanced practice nursing.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Chair of the Department of Nursing is an integral member of the Council of Chairs. The Chair is responsible for the budget, curriculum, faculty and student scholarship, and teaching excellence for the Department of Nursing.

Successful candidates should have a vision for program growth and for nursing and health care in a rural area. As a member of the Council of Chairs, the Chair serves as a key consultant to the Provost on all academic matters at the institution and collaborates with other chairs on campus to shape the academic culture of the campus. The chair will contribute to the teaching mission of the institution through classroom-based and clinical supervision. The typical load for a chair is 2-3 courses per semester or the equivalent in clinical supervision. UVA Wise is currently considering the expansion of nursing curriculum at the graduate level to support local needs. Additionally, planning is underway for the renovation of Wyllie Hall, which will accommodate an expanded nursing program. The Chair and nursing faculty collaborate with area health care agencies for enhanced learning and health care quality.
