Job Summary

The College of Science Advising Center (CoSAC) Advisor will work with general supervision to provide academic advising and related student services for undergraduates in the College of Science. Such services may include guiding entering and continuing students through academic planning and successful paths to graduation, helping students find solutions for issues they may face, informing students about and authorizing students for relevant university services and resources, participating in College of Science Advising Center (CoSAC) programs, events, and projects, and advocating relevant constituents to address student needs. The incumbent will utilize a variety of advising strategies and academic support services to insure student retention and success through graduation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advises students on academic issues
  • Provides guidance in course selection in keeping with the student's interests, values and abilities
  • Clarifies academic policies, college regulations, program requirements, procedures, and other college information
  • Advises College of Science students that are identified as being on Probation according to the College of Science Probation in the Major policy
  • Provides academic advising to College of Science freshman and transfer students during Orientations sessions when appropriate

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of university policies, major, GE, university and system requirements for graduation
  • Effective communication skills particularly with diverse populations
  • Knowledge of current student success practices
  • Demonstrated ability to use software applications such as google docs/drives, excel spreadsheets, word processing, and databases
  • Knowledge of university policies, major, GE, university and system requirements for graduation

Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field.
  • Two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field. A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s in Counseling, Counselor Education, or Social Work
  • Demonstrated ability to use software applications such as google docs/drives, excel spreadsheets, word processing, and databases
  • Demonstrated experience providing academic advising to undergraduate students at a comprehensive public university or community college
  • Experience working with and/or advising SJSU students in the Science/STEM disciplines (Biology, Chemistry, Math, etc.)

Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,304/month - $4,456/month
Hiring Range: $4,304/month – $6,120/month

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was offered the position on a contingent basis.

The standard background check includes: criminal check, employment and education verification. Depending on the position, a motor vehicle and/or credit check may be required. All background checks are conducted through the university's third party vendor, Accurate Background. Some positions may also require fingerprinting. SJSU will pay all costs associated with this procedure. Evidence of required degree(s) or certification(s) will be required at time of hire.
