The Department of Health Systems and Population Health Sciences in the newly established University of Houston College of Medicine invites applications for a Clinical faculty position in quality improvement and patient safety and as a faculty member within the Humana Integrated Health System Sciences Institute.

We are recruiting new Clinical faculty that have achieved excellence in education and research and are prepared to contribute to our bold vision ( ). At this time, all faculty appointments in the College of Medicine are non-tenure track. The College of Medicine anticipates being able to make tenure track positions available for application in the future.

This faculty is expected to engage in collaborative research within the Department, Institute, College, and University, teach medical students, and, when appropriate, mentor junior faculty and students. Applicants must have a doctoral degree in a field relevant to quality improvement and patient safety, including medicine, nursing, behavioral science, industrial and organizational psychology, human factors psychology, cognitive psychology, industrial and systems engineering, health services research, and epidemiology. The successful applicant will have a track record as a collaborator on grants (or potential to be), a leader on quality improvement initiatives, and/or evidence of interactive, integrative, and cross-disciplinary teaching experience. We welcome candidates whose experience in teaching, research, or community service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence.

Candidates are expected to participate in funded research through active collaboration with faculty members at the University of Houston. Ideal candidates should also have interest in quality improvement and patient safety as it pertains to primary care, public health, population health, or value-based care models. Their research should focus on the epidemiology and elimination of errors, quality measurement, quality improvement methods and tools, dissemination and implementation, improving health care efficiency and value, organizational learning, human factors engineering, root cause analysis, failure mode effects analysis, health care teams, clinical simulation, or change management.

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching (1-page) and a statement describing a quality improvement initiative that they have led (1-page), students’ evaluations, and names and contact information of three references.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

Primary Responsibilities :

  • Department of Health Systems and Population Health Sciences Faculty
    • Supervising and executing relevant aspects of the research process, including question formulation, study design, study implementation, data analysis, and dissemination of results
    • Collaborating with research partners, including the University of Houston’s Colleges, Departments, and Institutes and external organizations
    • Developing performance improvement/patient safety initiatives with clinical affiliates
    • Applying quality improvement tools (e.g., root cause analysis, failure mode and effects analysis, cause and effect diagrams, and statistical process control) to address quality and patient safety issues
    • Collaborating with interprofessional teams
    • Securing extramural funding
    • Developing and teaching relevant sessions within the medical school curriculum
    • Mentoring students and faculty in quality improvement projects
    • Providing feedback to mentees, staff, and students
    • Contributing to relevant College of Medicine committees
  • Humana Institute Faculty
    • Participating in research, service, and educational activities that contribute to the mission of the Humana Institute
    • Collaborating with Humana researchers
  • Clinical (when appropriate)
    • Evaluating and treating patients
    • Maintaining an electronic health record of encounters, diagnostic studies, and referrals
    • Participating in interdisciplinary team-based care

Full-Time: 1 FTE

Qualifications :

  • Doctoral degree in a field relevant to quality improvement and patient safety
    • With relevant expertise in quality improvement and patient safety, individuals with clinical degrees including physicians and nurses are eligible to apply
  • Commitment to innovative approaches to education and learning
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • For clinicians:
    • Board certification or board eligibility
    • Medical Licensure in the State of Texas, by the start date
    • Experience with an electronic health record

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with building partnerships across disciplines in pursuit of educational or research objectives
  • Track record as a collaborator on grants (or the potential to be)
  • Experience with quality improvement and patient safety in clinical settings
  • Experience with cross-disciplinary teaching in an integrated medical curricula
  • Experience using different teaching methods which may include case-based learning, ‘flipped classroom’, problem-based learning, interactive large group presentation, and audience response systems.
  • Experience with curricular and instructional design
  • Experience teaching quality improvement and patient safety for health professions students
  • Experience with administrative responsibilities within an academic environment.
  • Experience with student mentoring and advising
