Dean and Director, Music Division
The Juilliard School
New York, New York
The mission of The Juilliard School is to provide the highest caliber of artistic education for gifted musicians, dancers, and actors from around the world, so that they may achieve their fullest potential as artists, leaders, and global citizens.
The Juilliard School seeks a dean and director to oversee the artistic and educational activities of the school’s music division. Reporting to the provost and working closely with students, faculty, and administrators, the dean and director will lead the school’s largest division, with a vision reflecting Juilliard’s core values of excellence, creativity, and inclusiveness. Juilliard’s renowned music division enrolls some 700 students from 44 countries and has a distinguished college faculty of 360 full and part time members.
Candidates for the role should bring a creative and forward-thinking artistic voice, coupled with a deep understanding of the educational needs of the classical music and jazz students in the school. Overseeing the classical music and jazz studio faculty and performance-related curricula, the dean and director must sustain and enhance Juilliard’s legacy of excellence while promoting pedagogy and practices that fully embrace the school’s “artist as citizen” ethos. Juilliard’s next dean and director should have deep and broad knowledge of the best practices in the international music community, as well as the ability to draw upon working relationships with key artistic and administrative leaders in that community. At the same time, the dean and director must be able to successfully communicate and collaborate with multiple departments and divisions within the school, resulting in ongoing cross-disciplinary learning opportunities for students.
This is an exciting time to join the leadership team of a premier institution. Under the dynamic leadership of President Damian Woetzel, Juilliard is well positioned for continued success and growth. The school features a world-class faculty, a talented and committed administrative staff, and is located in the heart of Lincoln Center – all of which it leverages to recruit the very best students from around the world, preparing them for dynamic careers that will shape the future of the arts.
