    Department of English
    College of Arts & Humanities

    About our Department

Our English Education program consists of an undergraduate major in the College of Arts and Humanities and a fifth-year credential program offered in partnership with the Kremen School of Education and Human Development. We believe the best English classrooms are communities in which teachers and students work together to analyze, construct and apply meaning. Class sizes are typically 25 or less for undergraduate courses, 15 or less for graduate courses. Faculty members have ample opportunity to design new courses in response to changes in the field, student interests, and their own scholarly leanings.

We are scholars of literature, rhetoric, and teacher education, as well as creative writers. Home to several thriving literary journals, the department includes winners of the Walt Whitman Prize, The American Book Award, the Young Lions Award, and Fulbright scholars. Our students and faculty are actively engaged with local communities. A newly developed service-learning class for English Education offers students experience working with local community literacy projects. The department organizes a Young Writers Conference that for more than 40 years has attracted 400+ high school students and educators from all over the region annually and, in partnership with a local school and youth media organization, the Sherley Anne Williams and Lawson Fusao Inada writing contest, celebrating authors of color.

Across campus, and in partnership with local communities, there are numerous research and service opportunities for collaborations in youth literacy, including work in bilingual education, YA literature, youth and social media, and universal design in writing instruction. The Arne Nixon Center for Children's Literature, in the campus Henry Madden Library, is home to one of the nation's best collections of LBGTQ literature for younger readers and in 2015 hosted a conference “Outlawed: The Naked Truth about Censored Literature for Young People” that brought together local educators, international scholars, and writers of literature for young people, including Jacqueline Woodson, Leslea Newman, and Matt de la Pena. The University also hosts the San Joaquin Valley site of the National Writing Project and English faculty serve with the local affiliate of the California Association of Teachers of English/National Council of Teachers of English, Fresno Area Teachers of English (FACET).

The English department serves as a base for a number of student-led organizations, including the Student Association for the Study of English (SESA), which organizes an annual symposium of student research in English Studies; the 30-year-old Chicanx Writers and Artists Association (CWAA) and the newly formed Hmong American Ink and Stories (HAIS) club. After hosting the 2007 MELUS Conference, the English Department organized a yearly Undergraduate Conference on Multiethnic Literatures of the Americas (UCMLA). Now in its 12th year, UCMLA has provided a platform for presentation of undergraduate scholarship in the field, gathered graduate students and faculty together in event planning, and brought to campus such writers and scholars as Cherrie Moraga, Roxane Gay, Maxine Hong Kingston, Ishmael Reed, and Erica L. Sanchez.
