Summary

The Department of Ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine in seeking a qualified, highly motivated and creative Postdoctoral Associate to join the de Paiva lab. Dr. Cintia de Paiva's research focuses on the understanding of the interplay of the aging and cathepsin S and generation of auto receptive t cells on the ocular surface and lacrimal gland.

Candidates should hold a M.D. or Ph.D. or equivalent degree in immunology, molecular biology, microbiology or related field and have published in a peer-reviewed journal (s). Prior experience using mouse as a model system is recommended. Previous experience in ophthalmology or immunology is a plus.

Job Duties

The Postdoctoral Associate works closely with the PI and other lab personnel performing complex research and research techniques. Duties may include but are not limited to designing and conducting experiments in a controlled laboratory setting. Duties may include performing experiments, collecting, analyzing and reporting data; design an immunohistochemistry with proper controls and proper detection colorimetric reactions, (HRP, alkaline phosphatase, streptavidin, etc.); design and perform flow cytometry with fluorescence minus controls, positive and negative controls in cervical lymph nodes, collagenase-digested lacrimal glands and spleens; designs and perform intracellular staining for interferon-gamma, IL-17 and TNF-a; analyze data using FlowJo software; design and perform small surgeries as needed (sympathetic axotomy and others); work with animals, including genotyping, husbandry and inducing dry eye protocol; administer oral gavage, ocular topical eyedrops and subconjunctival injections as needed; design and perform real-time PCR Tagman Probes; analyze data using the deltadelta CT method.

The Postdoctoral Associate is responsible for maintaining oversight and ensuring that laboratory equipment and supplies are clean and sterile, and maintains the cleanliness of the laboratory, orders laboratories supplies and equipment. This positon may supervise other laboratory staff.

Design and conduct experiments in a controlled laboratory setting. Duties may include performing experiments, collecting, analyzing and reporting data.

  • Design an immunohistochemistry with proper controls and proper detection colorimetric reactions (HRP, alkaline phosphatase, streptavidin, etc).
  • Design and perform flow cytometry with fluorescence minus controls, positive and negative controls in cervical lymph nodes, collagenase-digested lacrimal glands and spleens. Design and perform intracellular staining for interferon-gamma, IL-17 and TNF-a. Analyze data using FlowJo software.
  • Design and perform small surgeries as needed (sympathetic axotomy and others).
  • Work with animals, including genotyping, husbandry and inducing dry eye protocol. Administer oral gavage, ocular topical eyedrops and subconjunctival injections as needed.
  • Design and perform real-time PCR using Tagman Probes; analyze data using the deltadelta CT method.
  • In vivo (mice) and in-vitro systems will be used.


Minimum Qualifications
  • MD or Ph.D in Basic Science, Health Science, or a related field.
  • No experience required.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree in immunology, molecular biology, microbiology or related field and have published in a peer-reviewed journal(s)
  • Prior experience using mouse as a model system
  • Previous experience in ophthalmology or immunology
  • Prior experience with flow cytometry
  • Experience in mouse immunology/mouse ophthalmology
  • The ideal candidate will have the ability to work comfortably and collaboratively with a diverse group of researchers
  • Clear and effective communication skills
  • Scientific creativity, reliability, and independence in research
