Sr. Community Outreach Specialist

The Sr. Community Outreach Specialist will assist and engage with other outreach specialists and peer navigators in HIV, HCV and STI testing and with the goal of building rapport and guidance towards recruiting and linking individuals interested in promoting pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) as well as recruit individuals into innovative PrEP programs – for example, telemedicine, home-based HIV and sexually transmitted infection testing, and/or community pop up clinic sites. Responsibilities will include HIV, HCV, and STI testing for outreach traveling to sites around the city and tabling, along with posting materials around Baltimore in-person and through an app.

The position will also help to oversee and assist with the data collection, data cleaning and the transformation of data into data dashboards. The Sr. Outreach Specialist will assist with preparing reports from preliminary analysis, which could be used for monthly reports to the funders, publications, and presentations under the supervision of the Center Director.

The successful applicant will work with an interdisciplinary team of faculty. This position works closely with Principal Investigator (PI) and Research and Sponsored Projects Manager of The REACH Initiative in all aspects of study management and communicates with the study team and PI on all clinical aspects of patient management. This position will require exceptional time management and project coordination skills.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Oversee data management activities; including completion of data collection, entry, error reports, transferring, and editing raw datasets if necessary, and keeping a good tracking system of any changes.
  • Oversees & performs constructions of database, datasets, variables & data cleaning.
  • Help to produce tables and graphs in publication-quality form, & present results to senior investigators.
  • Serves as a quality control checkpoint person for data collected and analyses (conducted by self or others).
  • Provide preliminary and interim analyses of data; additionally, perform statistical calculations under the guidance of Center Director and to assist with preparation of reports, scientific abstracts and method section of manuscripts related to projects.
  • Develop REDCap database for projects.
  • Coordinate activities and events with other community outreach specialist on the team and also with multiple community-based organizations.
  • Attend outreach events and oversees data collection and monitoring process.
  • Mentoring and guiding community outreach specialist to improve the healthcare and quality of care for persons living with HIV and the prevention of HIV.
  • Establish rapport with LGBTQI community members.
  • Provide general information regarding HIV prevention and PrEP to community members.
  • Respond to inquiries and requests for assistance from clients.
  • Provide information on providers for HIV treatment or PrEP, schedule required intake and follow-up appointments, and make appointment reminder calls.
  • Provide information on and complete applications for PrEP assistance programs.
  • Provide information on health insurance and referrals to Insurance Navigators as needed.
  • Perform risk assessment and counseling for STIs and HIV.
  • Work to eliminate social service barriers to care with client, including transportation, childcare, housing, employment, and insurance.
  • Provide referrals to appropriate staff to assist with barriers, including substance use, mental health, and/or intimate partner violence.
  • Participate in health promotion and health education outreach activities.
  • Participate and conduct HIV and Hepatitis C testing at outreach events.
  • Participate in other research and/or practice-based initiatives as workload allows.
  • File, retrieve, and maintain client records.
  • Perform all work activities per established protocols and procedures.
  • Attend meetings and trainings.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all clients in accordance with employers’ procedures.
  • With appropriate training and as needed by employer, conduct specimen collection in community-based settings.
  • Any other duties at the discretion of the manager or PI of the project.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Some related experience required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • General knowledge of HIV disease and HIV prevention activities is helpful, but not required if willing to undergo necessary training(s).

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Social media experience a plus.
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to work independently and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Must be willing to travel throughout the city and state of Maryland.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology a plus.
  • Ability to work with populations across ages, sexual orientations, socio-economic circumstances.

Technical qualifications or specialized certifications:

  • HIV testing and counseling certification a plus.
