This full-time, 12-months per year position, under direction, organizes, coordinates and personally performs skilled work, oversees a centralized tool room available for visual arts students and the fabrication and modification of a wide variety of hand and power tools, equipment and facility repair and remodeling as required for the visual arts instructional programs; performs related duties as assigned.

Examples of Duties

  • Coordinates and prioritizes activities and functions related to the purchase, storage, loan, fabrication and repair of a wide variety of tools and equipment required for various visual arts instructional programs
  • Develops and recommends implementation of policies and procedures related to the loan of tools and equipment to faculty and students
  • Investigates tool and equipment needs and purchases, modifies existing supplies or fabricates as required
  • Performs skilled work in the repair and remodeling of facilities
  • Confers with faculty, administration and other user staff to determine needs and available monies
  • Plans, schedules, assigns and reviews the work of technical support and student assistant staff responsible for the storage, distribution and preventive maintenance and repair of tools and equipment
  • Maintains accurate records of tools and equipment loaned and returned; coordinates and takes physical inventories of such items on a periodic basis
  • Maintains equipment and supplies in a safe and usable condition
  • Researches and recommends equipment and tool upgrades and purchases
  • Provides input into the tool rooms budget and monitors expenses
  • Initiates purchase orders and requests
  • Personally performs skilled work in the fabrication, machining and repair of tools and equipment, including using welding equipment
  • Maintains accurate records and files and prepares reports and other written materials related to the work performed utilizing a computer and various software
  • Prepare and maintain required documentation regarding the purchase, storage and disposal of hazardous materials
  • Demonstrates sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disabi­lity, gender identity, sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff
  • May require driving for position-related duties
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned


Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Equivalent to completion of two years of college with major coursework in visual arts or an appropriate technical field OR
  • Completion of an apprenticeship program in a machinist or tool making field AND
  • Three years of experience in the visual arts or related technical machinist or tool making field.


Please note : Additional responsible visual arts and tools coordination experience as outlined above may be substituted for the education on a year for year basis.

Desirable :

  • Experience in an academic setting
Knowledge of :
  • Tools, equipment and supplies used in various visual arts media production and instructional activities
  • Techniques and materials related to the production of such tools and equipment
  • Safety practices and equipment related to the work
  • Basic budgetary principles and practices
  • Basic principles of program organization and administration
  • Safe handling, storage and disposal of hazardous materials
  • Shop mathematics
  • Basic knowledge of desktop computing including word processing and database software
  • Basic inventory control, recordkeeping and purchasing practices
  • Basic supervisory principles and practices
Ability to:
  • Estimate tools, materials, and equipment needed to accomplish visual arts projects in varied disciplines
  • Design, fabricate, modify, maintain, and repair a wide variety of tools and equipment
  • Interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations and procedures
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and the community
  • Operate a computer with sufficient skill to enter data into a computer to produce correspondence using various software such as email, word processing and database software
  • Ensure safe handling, storage, use, and disposal of hazardous materials
  • Plan, organize, budget and assume programmatic responsibility for the tool room
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare reports
  • Exercise sound judgment within policy and procedural guidelines
  • Direct and review the work of others
  • Provide work instruction to others in work procedures
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work

Other Requirements :
  • A valid California driver’s license or ability to access and use alternative transportation.
  • Must be willing to work with welding equipment and hazardous substances
  • Valid first aid certificate and ability to maintain during the course of employment or ability to acquire certificate within first six months of employment


Additional Information

Starting Salary Range: $4,222 to $4,655 per month; maximum initial salary step placement on the classified salary schedule is step 3. Full-time assignment, 12 months per year. Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with evenings and weekends as required. Position scheduled to begin as soon as possible, pending continued funding and Governing Board ratification. Salary is subject to proration based on beginning date of assignment.
