Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Primary Purpose of Division, Department and/or Grant Proposal: The University of North Carolina Wilmington, the state’s coastal university, is dedicated to learning through the integration of teaching and mentoring with research and service. Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Police Officer position is primarily responsible for implementing a community policing model to advance the strategic goals and priorities of the university.
Officers are required to: work closely with individuals and groups within the university community for the purpose of maintaining an atmosphere that supports quality campus life and reduces crime-related risks and vulnerabilities on the campus; conduct high visibility of patrol of campus buildings, grounds, roadways, and parking facilities; respond to calls for service; enforce university policies and state laws; demonstrate excellent communication and decision-making skills in the delivery of police services; and to render additional related services including, but not limited to, building security and educational programming. The selected candidate may be assigned to foot, bike, or car patrol.
Officers work rotation shifts with 10% shift premium, holiday pay, and overtime when approved. This position will participate in the Teachers and State Employees Retirement Program for State Law Enforcement Officers and are vested after 10 years. Police Officers qualify for federal and state law enforcement life insurance benefits. UNCW contributes 5% of salary to a personal 401(K) account.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency. Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment.
Preferred education, professional skills and experience
Officers must have a good working knowledge of criminal and civil law and procedures as well as the interpersonal skills to effectively enforce the laws of government to the effect they were designed to accomplish.
Officer must have the ability to carry out the responsibilities of the position.
Must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills
Must demonstrate an appreciation for and the ability to implement a modern community policing initiative and law enforcement functions within an urban university setting
Must demonstrate the ability to recognize issues and dangerous situations and respond in an appropriate manner
Must demonstrate the ability to understand and operate within applicable laws, policies and procedures
Must demonstrate the ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse populations including students, parents, faculty, staff and the general public
Must demonstrate abilities with Microsoft Office Suite (or comparable programs
Required Certifications or licensure
Certification is required and administered through the NC Administrative Code in 12 NCAC 9A Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
If not certified, must be able to complete certification as directed by the department.
