THE SEARCH 

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) seeks a strategic and visionary leader to serve as its inaugural Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer and Vice President (CDEIO/VP). The CDEIO/VP will be a proven leader who will serve as a thought leader with a depth of knowledge on diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies and practices. Supporting senior leadership, the CDEIO/VP will drive a strategic path towards UMB’s vision of advancing a community that embraces diversity, equity and inclusion. The CDEIO/VP will foster excellence-and-equity across all dimensions of the academic mission and culture of UMB.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is the academic health, law, and social work university of the state, and its achievements have earned it national and international prominence. The University includes the six professional schools of dentistry, law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and social work, and an interdisciplinary Graduate School. Embodying excellence in their teaching, research, and clinical programs, each of the schools is nationally ranked. The university is well positioned for a visionary and inclusive leader to directly address current challenges and shepherd the University forward into its next era of success guided by a commitment to inclusive excellence.

Drawing on the strength and energy of UMB’s diversity of experiences and backgrounds, the CDEIO/VP will lead the institution to make practical progress on a daily basis toward cultivating a caring community focused on shared values of accountability, civility, collaboration, diversity, excellence, knowledge, and leadership. Reporting directly to President Bruce E. Jarrell, the CDEIO/VP will work in close collaboration with the provost and other senior officers to lead the development and implementation of a strategic action plan that leverages current efforts; create a sustainable and lasting infrastructure that effects every level of the university; and establish a system of progress reporting using data. The successful candidate will be a sophisticated relationship builder, an experienced professional who disseminates best practices, and a leader who inspires awareness and enthusiasm to help diversity, equity and inclusion flourish at UMB.
