ABOUT AIC

American International College (AIC) is a private, coeducational, four-year comprehensive institution of higher education located on a 72-acre campus in the geographic center of Springfield, Massachusetts. The campus comprises two sites located approximately 1/2 mile apart and has 29 buildings overall. Included in the inventory of buildings are student residences for a resident population of over 800 students.

AIC is a highly diverse community providing access and opportunity to students from a variety of backgrounds, religions, ethnicities, and countries. AIC serves between 2500 and 3000 graduate and undergraduate students with over 50% classifying as Pell eligible and over 50% identifying as persons of color.  A variety of undergraduate and graduate programs are offered through the Schools of Business, Arts and Sciences; Health Sciences; and Education. AIC’s mission is to prepare students for personal fulfillment, professional achievement, and civic engagement through educational experiences that transform lives. AIC’s academic programs are intended to engage students in theory and applied learning, while preparing them for the challenges and opportunities presented in the global environment.

Under the leadership of Dr. Vincent Maniaci, AIC has strengthened and grown in position and stature over the past 15 years.  Most recently, the School of Business, Arts and Sciences added seven new and revised programs and began a new general education curriculum which was implemented in fall 2020.  The School of Education has been restructured in order to strengthen its focus on academic rigor, educator preparation partnerships, and a new bachelor’s degree in educational studies aligned to scaffold with the master’s in education and the Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies programs.  There are five academic programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, exercise science, and public health that comprise the School of Health Sciences.  The nursing, occupational therapy, and physical therapy programs boast 100% job placement and all have at least an 88% passage rate on national exams.  In addition, the exercise science program has a 100% graduation rate and is nationally recognized by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).  The public health program started as a bachelor’s degree and is expecting its first master’s degree graduates in May of 2021.  Through strong connections within the community, public health students have the opportunity for many internship and practicum experiences.  The School of Health Sciences has a strong focus on inter-professional education and features state-of-the-art facilities for hands-on learning.

AIC’s growth has incentivized the College to expand its facilities plan by spending over $30 million in the past five years on enhancing all aspects of the campus.  More specifically, the College has transitioned its library into a learning commons, modernized its dining commons, constructed a new health sciences facility, and built/created a graduate housing complex.

American International College is a proud member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), offering 25 varsity athletic programs.  The ice hockey program competes at the Division I level and is a member of the Atlantic Hockey Association. AIC was one of nine founding members of the AHA when it formed in 2003.  The other 24 varsity programs compete at the NCAA Division II level, 20 of which compete in the Northeast-10 Conference. AIC was a founding member of the then Northeast-7 in 1981, and currently sponsors programs that compete in baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, football, men's and women’s golf, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's soccer, softball, women's tennis, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field, and women's volleyball.  The wrestling program competes as an NCAA Division II independent in Super Region I, and is the only NCAA Division II wrestling program in New England. Emerging sports include women’s triathlon (independent) and women's rugby, which competes in the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA). In 2020, the department added men's volleyball, which competes as an independent. As a 26th sport, the department also sponsors a club men's rugby team which competes in the Liberty League – Division 1A.
