General Summary/Purpose:

Primary focus in the laboratory is to study epigenomics of cell type specification and the role of macrophages in tissue regeneration, metabolism and tumor growth and metastasis. The individual in this role must have knowledge in the following areas: mouse breeding and colony management, tissue culture and basic molecular biology (PCR, Western blot, molecular cloning), general lab organization, and training and day-to-day oversight of lab assistants. This position will report directly to the PI (Who is to oversee the day-to day operation, design experiments and participate in writing peer-reviewed publications. The candidate will make significant contributions to various aspects of the research efforts.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Performs sophisticated data analysis (RNA-sequencing data, metabolomics data, proteomics data and lipidomics data) by utilizing advanced third party software.
  • Develop and follow protocols forin vitroandin vivoassays, design experiments to investigate gene function in metabolism and oversee research projects, and provide oversight of trainees. Organize the weekly lab-meeting and coordinate with the PI. Help team building with other members in the lab. Will guide, direct and facilitate problem solving for entry-level lab members on day to day problems. Organize a regular journal club (monthly) and invite other groups in the program to participate
  • Acts as a consultant to refine or adapt methodologies to fit research objectives. Collaborates in development of new technologies, protocols and uses of equipment.
  • Participates in generating publications, and may contribute original thoughts, hypotheses, and analysis to reports, abstracts, manuscripts, and grant proposals. May process analyzed data into figures for scientific publications.
  • Independently performs all experiments related to laboratory interests.
  • Enhance problem solving through interactions and discussions with collaborators or senior researchers at meetings and or professional presentations.
  • In conjunction with PI, makes decisions regarding research projects that require assessment, revision of objectives, or altering scientific direction; considers resources and lab priorities when making recommendations for changes to research projects. .
  • Perform routine operational activities and day-to-day laboratory management, including but not limited to acquisition of supplies and equipment, inventory review, equipment maintenance to ensure the laboratory remains operational
  • Responsible for ordering of supplies in SAP. Responsible for coordinating with PI on future capital equipment purchases including procuring quotes from vendors.

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or related field required.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques required.
  • Additional education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula***.
  • Experience supervising trainees and managing work projects of less-experienced laboratory personnel.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters is preferred, and may substitute for some experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Advanced knowledge in molecular biology and cellular assays in addition to experience with in vivo dietary studies in laboratory mice.

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:

  • Must have hands on experience in the field of molecular biology and genetics

Any Specific Physical Requirements for the Job:

  • Employee may remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for up to 40% of the time.
  • Employee is required to operate small laboratory tools that require manual dexterity.
  • Prolonged vision requirements include viewing computer screen, paper reports/documents, charts and results.
  • Visual acuity is required to distinguish fine gradation of color or structure and closely examine specimens (including via a microscope)
  • May transport equipment and supplies usually less than 40 pounds from one area to another (in the laboratory).
  • May be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with proper training, or precautions/lifting aides (example: supply boxes or Formalin cubes). In some areas work space is limited.

Laboratory Environment:

  • Exposure to toxins and infectious agents exist, but potential for personal injury or harm is minimized if established safety and health precautions are followed.
  • Must refer to and are expected to comply with procedure manuals, follow proper laboratory protocols and safety policy/procedures, and be familiar with material data safety sheets in assigned work areas.
  • Able to read and understand all Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) guidelines applicable to assigned work area.
  • Working in laboratory where there may be discomforts due to odors, noise, temperature fluctuations, and working around lab equipment.
  • Research areas may include animal, human, human products, DNA, and radiation protocols.
  • Use of personal protective equipment may be advised or required.

***JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
