Bennington College seeks a technical instructor in photography for a full time, 36 weeks per year appointment to work closely with faculty, staff, and students. Responsibilities include providing technical assistance to students and faculty in support of the photography curriculum, including both analog and digital labs and lighting studio, and management of photo studios and equipment. The technical instructor provides safety training and oversight as well as 1:1 instruction on software, equipment, processes and techniques, oversees photo equipment, inventory, and studio scheduling, trains and oversees student workers, performs minor repairs to equipment as needed, and responds to photography faculty requests. The candidate must have a strong background in both analog and digital photography from capture to print, experience with continuous and strobe light sources, working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, and experience with photography-related software and equipment such as scanners, printers, and screen calibration. Based on expertise and experience, the successful candidate may apply for limited teaching opportunities.
A high regard for personal and studio safety, willingness and ability to work across disciplines with a diverse body of students and faculty, strong communication and interpersonal skills, and mechanical aptitude are required; teaching experience and a Bachelor’s degree or higher are highly preferred. Experience in training and supervising students is expected, as is an interest in contemporary art and design practices. Bennington serves a diverse student population - inclusive of ethnic/racial minorities, international and global constituents, sexual minorities, and various social classes, among other identities. Our staff and faculty also reflect diverse backgrounds and identities. All employees are expected to be respectful and responsive to these differences in the service of building community that promotes student and employee success. Each individual (faculty, staff and students) will be accountable for upholding these values. The College’s approach to pluralism and inclusivity—both as fields of inquiry and practice—is to prioritize flexible thought, and to invite the examination of access, value, and power through its institutional policies and areas of study.
The review of applications will commence in late October and continue until the position is filled. This position will begin in February 2021 and requires successful completion and acceptable results of a background check.
