Business Services at the University of Montana invites applications for a Veteran Affairs Certifying Officer (Accounting Associate III) to join their team. This employee is an integral member of the Student Accounts Team and is expected to provide high quality customer service to students and office team members as well as a variety of external customers such as UM departments, families of students, other government entities, etc.

This position is a Veteran Affairs Certifying Officer responsible for the billing of the VA Chapter 33 students and monitoring for accuracy the wire payments applied to the students’ accounts by Treasury cashiers. They will work with the University of Montana Veterans Center to ensure that veterans are assisted with the process of Chapter 33 funding as provided by the federal Veteran Affairs Administration. After the 15th class day, they will submit billing to the federal VA ONCE site for payment of the Chapter 33 funds for qualifying veterans. As wire payments are received, they will confirm the payment amounts and work with Business Services Treasury Cashiers to apply the payments to the students’ accounts. They are the main point of contact in Student Accounts for veterans’ questions.

This position will also process and manage Third-Party Contracts, miscellaneous off-campus billing and a variety of state and private educational funds (i.e. 5299 plans, Nevada State educational savings, Washington State GET funds, trust funds, etc.). This includes setting up contracts, billing third parties, monitoring and collecting account balances due.

This position is expected to manage the Deferred Payment Plan including monitoring of Web pages, application process, responding to emails in the DPP public folder, implementing changes, communicating changes to students, families and staff and training of staff as needed in the functions and use of the Deferred Payment Plan. They will monitor the functionality of the system and work with the Systems team to maintain and test the Banner system. They will monitor and work with Systems team to update as needed the Deferred Payment Plan web page on the Business Services web site.

In addition, this position will assist in a variety of tasks and functions as assigned and shared with other staff in Student Accounts – Late Registration Fee Waivers, Simultaneous Enrollment, Canadian Tax documents and other tasks as may be assigned.

  • Proficiency with the operation and simple maintenance of standard office equipment (ten-key, copiers, printers, fax, multi-line phones)


Minimum Required Experience
  • High School diploma and two (2) years’ experience in a proven customer service and basic bookkeeping role


Preferred Qualifications
  • Associates degree in Accounting or a related field

Department: Business Services

Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, 12 months/year.

Salary: $14.59/hrCurrent employee’s rate of pay for this position will be determined by the staff compensation plan and will minimally be this posted salary. For questions and details regarding the staff compensation plan, email the Compensation Department .

Probationary Period: Six months minimum
