Area Coordinator, UM Housing
UM Housing invites applications for an Area Coordinator to join their team. The person assigned to this position manages all day-to-day activities related to student staff supervision, living learning programs, and works to develop cohesive, safe, inclusive, and positive communities under the guidelines established in the University of Montana Student Conduct Code, University of Montana policies and procedures, and UM Housing policies and procedures within 3 Residence Halls or the Apartment Communities.
The individual assigned to this position will supervise 12-24 live-in student staff members, develop and implement the Residential Curriculum; develop, manage and coordinate living/learning activities; and work collaboratively with the summer conference coordinator in the supervision of the summer staff.
Position duties include, but are not limited to:
- Oversees operational and administrative functions of daily residential community management in communities ranging in size of 590-1000 residents
- Interacts with staff, students, dependents, guests, faculty and visitors working, residing or living within the UM Housing facilities
- Serves as liaison to campus partners, including but not limited to the Curry Health Center, Office for Student Success, UC Student Involvement, Campus Dining, UM Police, and other University departments whose functions affect residence hall and apartment students
- Acts decisively, diplomatically, and exercises independent judgment and discretion to advance and protect departmental and University relations in resolving situations that are unique, controversial, or not fully resolved by student staff
- Responds to parent concerns, while maintaining confidentiality for students
- Collaborates with fulltime administrative associates or apartment office managers on the area desk operations and has primary oversight over all student staff scheduling and work in area desks or apartment offices
- Implements departmental processes including hall or apartment occupancy audits and health and safety inspections
- Support with desk processes and manage daily operations of the Area Desks
- Chairs one or more departmental Quality Circle and/or one departmental Committee
- Supports departmental processes
- Represents department at and coordinates building and room tours for various orientation and recruitment events
Community Development/Residential Curriculum
- Assists in the development and implementation of the Residential Curriculum
- Directs programmatic initiatives and community development for area
- Facilitates and implements Living Learning Communities in assigned area and establishes and maintains relationships with relevant campus partners related to LLC
- Recognizes early warning signs recorded in intentional interactions and follows-up with students of concern
- Conducts ongoing assessment of Resident Curriculum initiatives and learning goals
- Manages social fund budgets related to programmatic endeavors within UM Housing to assure financial stability and frugality
- Operates in StarRez database to manage and maintain information related to Residential Curriculum including student staff accountability, reporting, and recognizing and addressing community and student issues
- Oversees implementation and success of multiple Program and Activities Councils (PACs) or Apartment Community Councils and provides guidance and accountability for Community Development Coordinator’s advising these groups
- Investigates and adjudicates student conduct cases
- Designs and implements developmental sanctions for students found responsible for violating student conduct and housing policies
- Operates in Maxient conduct database to manage and maintain information related to conduct cases
- Assesses incidents to determine when informal follow-up and/or community response is necessary and implements said responses
- Oversees development and implementation of processes for enforcement of housing inspections and the removal of prohibited items
- Participates in an on-call duty rotation for the UM Housing community 365 days of the year and respond to situations as needed
- Serves as a liaison for students within the residential communities, and acts as an advocate for the student experience
- Resolves potential issues through mediation such as roommate conflicts and broader community concerns
- Supports incidents of concern, including but not limited to, Title IX, mental health, bias incidents, and implements action planning for response and care
- Directly supervises the 12-24 paraprofessionals staff within assigned communities
- Develops and implements student staff development activities
- Leads weekly student staff meetings
- Assists in the hiring process of student employees including recruitment, interviews, and selection
- Assists with the department wide training of student staff
- Provides feedback, both formal and informal, to student staff on job performance. Conduct formal evaluations with student staff two times per year
- Demonstrates ability to hold student staff accountable for departmental policies and procedures;
- Disciplines student staff when necessary
- Directly supervises 4-25 paraprofessional staff within assigned communities
- Manages the implementation of conferences within assigned communities
- Completes assigned summer projects
- Supports departmental planning and preparation with strategic initiatives and Curriculum development
- Ability to support students and refer students to campus resources such as Counseling Services and Student Advocacy Resource Center when appropriate
- Strong knowledge of residential education, student personnel administration and student development theory, student staff training and supervision, and diversity and inclusion needs and strategies common within a residential education organization
- Ability to effectively recruit, train, supervise, evaluate, and discipline employees; ability to evaluate and provide informal and formal feedback to student staff; ability to evaluate and communicate with staff about job performance and hold staff accountable to departmental policies and procedures
- Ability to develop a community development plan to create a positive, inclusive, and respectful residence hall environment. Additionally, will be able to manage and direct programs within residence halls
- Ability to resolve conflict through mediation
- Possess a thorough ability to communicate with a wide variety of diverse people in a precise and professional manner, both orally, electronically and through written word
- Maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive material in accordance with FERPA and the Clery Act
- Ability to critically think and resolve problems during emergency and crisis response
- Ability to maintain an organized workload requiring multi-tasking, delegations, as needed, and the need to prioritize various responsibilities with little direct supervision
- Ability to coordinate work schedules with staff, students, faculty, guests and visitors to ensure that both customer and building needs are met
- The position is a full-time Letter of Appointment and includes a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package (i.e., MUS health insurance benefits, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program).
- This is a live-in position and the incumbent will be provided a furnished on-campus apartment and a campus meal plan during the fall and spring semesters.
- Salary for this position is $35,568 per year commensurate with experience
Minimum Required Education & Experience
- Master’s degree in counseling, educational leadership, student affairs or related field; or a Bachelor’s degree and four years of experience directly related to the job functions.
- Two (2) years progressive experience in a residential education management position, including live-in residence hall experience
