About the Opportunity:
The lead web developer, university web strategy and solutions, plays the leading role for web development at Northeastern, striving to create clean, testable, and efficient web products that provide a positive experience to both end users and other developers alike. Along with strong OOP and MVC experience, they are a highly productive coder within the team's technology stack (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP) and associated frameworks (primarily modern WordPress frameworks, Laravel, TailwindCSS, VueJS). The lead web developer brings well-formed opinions about how to deliver high-quality, performant, accessible and secure web properties within the context of the university's brand that leads to a superior user experience across all platforms and devices. Along with strong coding abilities, the lead web developer effectively communicates with various clients and stakeholders as needed and delivers well-written, procedural documentation.

The lead web developer is expected to build strong relationships with other university developers in order to align with industry best practices and to implement centralized web strategies

Responsibilities:

Development
  • Lead the development of websites, applications and university resources leveraging the team's technology stack, including semantic HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP, TailwindCSS, VueJS, webpack, WordPress, Laravel and various static site generators (eg. NUXT, Jigsaw, etc.).
  • Develop features and maintenance releases for the various frameworks supported by Web Solutions (ie. University design system, WP Theme boilerplate, WP Plugins, etc.)
  • Ensure codebases have up-to-date, well-documented setup and deployment instructions.


  • Technical Leadership
  • Create scope, specifications and time estimates for varipus web projects.
  • Establish the standards and practicies for commit messages, pull requests, testing, code style and linting.
  • Coordinate with other university developers to set development standards that align with industry best practices and implement various centralized web strategies.
  • Proactively research new web solutions, tools and practices relevant to and beyond the team's technology stack.


  • Support and Logistics
  • Create efficiencies in the team's overall workflow by automating repetitive tasks, clearly delegating assignments and appropriately and eliminating any identified work deemed unnecessary.
  • Manage a backlog of bug fixes and feature requests for various projects.


  • Qualifications:
  • 5+ years experience with web development, or a similar field.
  • A strong understanding of semantic HTML and CSS including cross-browser compatibility, performance, and WCAG accessibility compliance.
  • Proven experience with PHP for modern WordPress theme and plugin development (familiarity with Laravel and the Roots WP tools a plus).
  • Experience creating custom blocks with Gutenberg.
  • Ability to write modern, performant, and accessible JavaScript using latest technologies.
  • Experience building reusable web patterns and components, ideally in the context of an organization's design system.
  • Experience with TailwindCSS, VueJS, AlpineJS.
  • Experience with third party integrations and client-side APIs
  • Experience with Git, PostCSS, linting and task runners such as Webpack.
  • Experience with Figma, Sketch or other collaborative design tools.
  • Familiarity with continuous integration and delivery
  • Able to collaborate effectively and communicate clearly with technical and non-technical clients.
  • Able to provide a code-based portfolio through a link to a GitHub profile or source files from a project.
