Job Summary:
The Director of Development Systems provides strategic leadership and direction for effective data infrastructure that supports Development goals and Furman's fundraising priorities. The Director oversees the Development Systems team, which includes gift processing, fund management structure, database management, data integrity, reporting and data analytics. This position reports to the Associate Vice President, Strategic Development Operations.
The Director of Development Systems is responsible for planning, executing and maintaining immediate and long-term strategies to address systems and data analytical needs. He/she provides technical solutions and direction across all internal business services and ensures that architecture and solutions are holistic and efficient; strategically grounded and maintain the highest standards of innovation, creativity, and execution excellence.
Job Description:
Development Systems Management:
Lead the creation, dissemination and utilization of Development systems, tools, applications, interfaces, policy, and integration to support organizational fundraising initiatives and priorities.
Establish and maintain comprehensive documentation on business processes, end user training manuals and training/troubleshooting plans and post-training/troubleshooting user feedback.
Manage and maximize the Development Systems budget.
Provide daily management of Development Systems staff including establishing annual goals (to support overall Development goals), conducting regular performance reviews and appropriate recognition, and supporting ongoing professional development opportunities. Serve as a back-up resource for database management and gift processing staff in times of absence and when needed.
Consult on all software and tools under consideration for purchase for Development efforts, and provide systems insights and recommendations for implementation.
Plan, organize and oversee all efforts for fiscal year-end and calendar year-end work, including reconciling funds to the general ledger and preparing receivable files. Track, project and reconcile all budget relieving gifts to various funds. Coordinate end-of-year calendar coverage during campus winter break, and facilitate communication of year-end processes to staff.
Ensure adherence to IRS gift policies, acknowledgement data requirements and Furman's standards for gift acceptance and reporting.
Ensure programmatic commitments, policies and procedures, financial standards, and legal requirements are met and managed for compliance.
Act independently within broad program goals to prioritize tasks in the absence of specific instructions and exercise independent judgment to identify and solve problems.
Development Systems Strategy:
Work closely with AVP of Strategic Development Operations and ITS to implement and maintain a comprehensive and results-oriented data systems plan that includes traditional and innovative strategies.
Provide vision, best practices recommendations and direction for effective infrastructure, systems and end-user utilization for various database applications and reporting tools.
Annually evaluate the Development Systems plan to ensure alignment to Furman's fundraising goals and priorities.
Regularly analyze current and future needs, anticipating and planning for growth and utilization of systems. Develop and streamline business policy, processes and make recommendations to optimize resources. Develop and implement project plans to sustain and improve fundraising system infrastructure.
Create and implement metrics and benchmarks to manage and evaluate work volume, work quality, and team effectiveness. Develop and manage workflows, measure their efficiency, and re-calibrate when necessary.
Reporting and Data Analytics:
Manage initiatives that impact Development business outcomes through business intelligence, data warehousing, reporting and analytical solutions.
Oversee reporting and data analysis for Development to support strategic decision-making. Design and implement self-service processes and solutions that drive intuitive and positive reporting experiences and outcomes for staff.
Participate in resource, program, finance and campaign assessments and reporting efforts. Develop and compile monthly reports and analysis to Development leadership, and support ongoing forecasting projections as needed.
Oversee all external communications/reporting that involves sharing of information with or about donors (includes quarterly reports to Board of Trustees, individual donor reports such as endowed fund reports and tax statements, honor rolls, etc.).
Create and maintain department restricted fund reports. Generate Benefactor Circle and Bell Tower Ball qualifier lists for stewardship.
Oversee efforts for all Development benchmarking surveys including VSE, Naples Group, Alumni Engagement Survey and any authorized by the VP for Development.
Prepare annual donor tax statements and thank you letter for monthly donors and special interest groups.
Development Systems Leadership:
Collaborate with ITS in the planning, integration and implementation of data solutions, both internal and external. Serve as liaison between Development and ITS, and participate in regular ITS meetings and committee efforts. Act as primary point of contact with Blackbaud.
Interface with other staff, cross-campus partners, and vendors to gather key information, communicate changes, and explore solutions to various issues.
Work with Finance & Administration office to share data and reports on fund accounting and serve as the primary resource in Development for auditors.
Liaise with Finance & Administration and other functional areas of Furman to improve cross-department functionality, create strategic alignment, streamline overlapping processes and implement new processes.
Work with Development leadership and the AVP, Strategic Development Operations to understand, strategize and execute data and reporting needs for campaign and new initiatives. Serve as a technical advisor to ensure proper planning to address data delivery and reporting needs.
Provide support to university leadership including the Advisory Council, Alumni Board, Parent Council and the Board of Trustees to plan, coordinate, problem-solve and present information and suggestions related to Furman's priorities and mission.
Other Responsibilities:
Adhere to the ethical and confidentiality guidelines of the Development Office, CASE and APRA. Maintain a high degree of confidentiality and responsibility regarding information related to University business and confidential constituent data.
Contributes to the creation of a diverse, equitable and inclusive work culture that encourages and celebrates differences.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education/Skill Requirements:
Bachelor's degree required.
Minimum of 5 years of experience as an operations manager or some related occupation, along with business or systems analyst experience. Management and team building experience required.
Experience with major fundraising database systems is required. Strong familiarity with software applications relevant to the Advancement profession. Experience with the Blackbaud products strongly preferred.
Experience with reporting, data visualization and business intelligence tools strongly preferred.

- Excellent oral and written communications skills, and ability
to work effectively with all levels of management. Experience
writing clearly and effectively for business purposes and for
various audiences.
- Experience in principles and practices of philanthropy and
development operations. Knowledge of current trends in fundraising
(including benchmarking and metrics).
- Ability to handle highly confidential information with respect
and discretion.
- Scrupulous accuracy and attention to detail.
