Job Description:
Reporting to the Dean of Strategic Enrollment Management, the Coordinator of College Navigators provides leadership for a comprehensive program of academic advising at Rappahannock Community College as part of a college-wide initiative focused on student engagement, retention, and completion of degrees, certificates and credentials. Areas of responsibility include providing supervision, leadership, and access to professional development for college navigators and working in tandem with other supervisors of high school and home school navigators to support the student’s academic journey.

Integrates the goals of the Vice President of Learning, Assistant Vice President of Instruction, Dean of Student Development, and Dean of Strategic Enrollment Management into advising adult students toward academic progression and completion. Engages a team of college navigators to complete routine activities, strategic projects, campaigns, and other assignments in support of department goals and in order to meet the needs of students. Oversees budgets for Chancellors Success Coach initiative grant and the Advising department.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Serves as EAB Navigate implementation coordinator for advising and retention activities. Facilitates training for advisors. Provides guidance training and supervision of advising staff in securing and reviewing documentation of disabilities; screens students for possible learning disabilities; determines eligibility for academic accommodations based on RCC documentation guidelines and established process; explains the accommodation process to students; and collaborates with faculty regarding specific student learning needs and accommodations.

Serves as a liaison to faculty advisors, providing support to faculty with mentoring/advising and the use of Navigate. Assists faculty in providing proactive advising and outreach to advisees. Maintains confidential records, utilizing educational databases, and effectively interacts with students, faculty, staff, and administrators. Provides administration of discretionary funding to assist students in need.

Additional responsibilities include teaching Student Development courses (SDV 100); serving on the college Threat Assessment Team (TAT); assisting with new student orientation and college recruitment. Participation in professional organizations, conferences, and training programs annually.

Finalists may be asked to perform a teaching demonstration.

KSA’s/Required Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, Human Services, Higher Education Administration, Student Development, or related field. Considerable experience counseling or advising in a postsecondary academic setting with knowledge of student retention strategies. Understanding of academic pathways and vocational/professional education as it relates to employment. Strong planning, organizational, and administrative skills. Strong writing and presentation skills. Ability to deal effectively with a diverse population of students, college personnel, alumni, recruiters, employers and others outside the college. The successful candidate will have demonstrated abilities in group leading, public speaking, formal classroom teaching and basic public relations. Strong knowledge of ADA law and accommodations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Considerable work experience in a community college setting. Experience effectively coordinating the work of others and taking initiative as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in the use of Canvas, Microsoft Office, and PeopleSoft, Navigate preferred.
  • Candidates must be able to work a flexible schedule including some evenings and occasional weekends.
