Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The university is preparing to publicly launch a comprehensive fundraising campaign at the beginning of 2021, and this Development Officer for Alumni Giving position will help inspire leadership level philanthropic investment among university constituents, especially among our 90,000 alumni. Successful candidates will help convey important campaign priorities to key constituents and help University Advancement build momentum around alumni participation goals.
We are seeking a candidate who proactively seeks out opportunities to connect with potential donors in order to increase annual giving production and meet campaign goals, as well as someone who will contribute new ideas and establish operations that transcend the campaign period.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a nationally recognized development team that values innovation, collaboration and accountability. The Development Officer for Alumni Giving provides a platform to build meaningful relationships with alumni from various decades, degree programs and regions in North Carolina and beyond. A great growth opportunity, offering the incumbent the ability to influence UNCW’s alumni participation rate concurrent with the university’s rising reputation.
• Manages a portfolio of approximately 100 prospects, primarily alumni, with the goal of increasing membership in the UNCW Society with annual gifts generally of $1,000 to $25,000
• Attends special events, board meetings, and other events held during and after normal working hours to cultivate and steward donors and prospective donors
• Collaborates with colleagues in support of the ongoing development and implementation of marketing strategies and stewardship efforts aligned with the UNCW Society.
• Involves planning, designing, implementing, and evaluating strategies to obtain outright annual gifts and pledges.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
A bachelors’ degree is required. A minimum of two years of professional fundraising experience in a higher education environment and/or experience in sales, marketing or communications.
• Superior verbal and written communication, interpersonal, relationship building, creative problem-solving skills
• Demonstrated ability to work interdependently and independently in a collaborative environment
• Ability to request and interpret complex data reports to evaluate prospects and progress
• Computer literacy, using Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, is fundamental
• Competency in navigation and use of the university’s database (Raiser’s Edge) and other development related software is essential
• Knowledge of the moves management cycle and process
• The incumbent must possess a passion for service excellence, integrity, a positive outlook, commitment to highest standard of donor ethics, a strong work ethic, be self-motivated and committed to high performance and dedication to the value of higher education.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
• Understanding of the needs and interests of donors in order to develop relationships between them and the university and the ability to travel extensively.
• Knowledge of the “Moves Management System.”

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The division for University Advancement responds to the needs of a variety of external and internal constituents in achieving its primary goals to: 1) Increase private financial support for prioritized university programs and activities, and 2) Improve external relations for the university through effective board management and donor stewardship. The division strives to raise funds, as outlined by the Chancellor’s vision statement and strategic plan, from the private sector to further the university mission of pursuing the resources that will enable our faculty and students to excel, and becoming intensely regionally engaged. In doing so, the division plans strategically to facilitate the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of all constituencies, and seeks to positively promote the university. The division’s fundraising efforts are enhanced by effective partnerships with components of the campus community as well as external audiences including alumni, parents, corporations, foundations, legislators, volunteer board members and friends. Development areas include major gifts, planned giving, corporate and foundation relations, annual giving, UNCW constituent liaison and alumni relations. Prospect management and research, advancement services, stewardship and advancement events and boards are support services for the fundraising activities of the division.
