THE ROUX INSTITUTE

Northeastern University

Portland, Maine

Building upon a decade of expansion through a network of campuses in the United States and beyond, Northeastern University launched a graduate education and research campus in Portland, Maine in spring 2020 with an initial $100-million gift from technology entrepreneur David Roux and his wife, Barbara. The initial gift by David and Barbara Roux is further enhanced by an additional $100-million gift from the Harold Alfond Foundation, an investment that will provide financial aid for graduate-level students, funding for post-doctoral research, and support for co-ops with Maine employers. The Roux Institute at Northeastern University is designed to be an engine of innovation, talent, and economic growth for Portland, the state of Maine, and the region. Partnership is what sets the education and research model apart. With leading companies at the table from day one, the Roux Institute and its partners are together creating an agile workforce prepared to thrive in a competitive landscape powered by artificial intelligence and an environment for innovation in the life sciences and other high-growth sectors. The research program will prioritize the application of employer- and government-sponsored research in the domains of artificial intelligence, health, sustainability, and security. The institute’s graduate degree and certificate programs will primarily focus on the practical application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in the digital and life sciences to prepare people for high-demand jobs and drive research that meets industry needs. The Roux Institute will not offer undergraduate degrees.

The Roux Institute seeks a number of talented leaders, scholars, and teachers to build out the educational and research infrastructure in Portland. Northeastern University now invites applications for the positions of Director of Engineering Research and Director of Data Visualization Research, among other teaching and research faculty positions, to be located in Portland, Maine.

Recognizing this current moment of unprecedented economic challenge for society, the contributions of a nimble, outcome-driven endeavor like the Roux Institute have never been more relevant. This is an outstanding opportunity to join a new startup near ground level, contribute to a highly innovative academic and research program, collaborate with leading industry partners, and contribute to the economic development of Maine at a top research university synonymous with entrepreneurship and transformational change in higher education and modern society.

These research directors will primarily oversee the development of highly interdisciplinary research programs and projects in close collaboration with corporate, philanthropic, and federal partners. They will lead a team of principal investigators working across a wide range of projects and are expected to help recruit and grow the research faculty in Portland, remaining flexible and opportunistic both in hiring and in developing new research directions, often in close collaboration with corporate and federal partners. The directors should bring a record of scholarly achievement in their own discipline or profession in addition to administrative acumen to craft a vision for engineering or data visualization research at the Roux Institute.
