Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Head Men's Golf Coach, the Assistant Coach will provide support and assistance with all aspects of the Men's Golf program. Assistant Men's Golf Coach is responsible for assisting in all recruiting, training, mentoring, fund raising activities, and coaching of the members of the Men's Golf team. Collegiate level playing ability is required in this position. The Assistant Coach is required to abide by the rules and regulations established by Furman University, the Southern Conference, and the NCAA. Furman University is a member of the NCAA at the Division I level. Assistant Coach will need to have the ability to recruit at a high academic and athletic level those prospective student-athletes that meet the admissions requirements of Furman University.

Job Description:

Responsibilities:

1. Assist the Head Coach and adheres to all conference and NCAA rules and regulations regarding recruiting by:
  • Coordinating recruiting efforts within the men's golf office
  • Traveling to tournaments, games and clinics to evaluate recruits
  • Evaluating swing videos
  • Writing and telephone all recruits, and maintain recruitment logs
  • Assisting in making final decisions regarding scholarship offer.


2. Teach athletic or golf areas of expertise to respective athletes.

3. Organize all travel arrangements and insure all paperwork is completed timely and accurately.

4. Assist with equipment purchases and provides security and care for the equipment.

5. Assist with Coordination of the admission process by:
  • Filling out pre-admission recruit evaluation forms and present to Admissions Office.
  • Making arrangements concerning admission visits and financial aid awards including mailing all forms, if necessary.
  • Communicating all information to potential recruits.


6. Assist with providing all reports and lists, which would include: scholarship, eligibility, awards, team rosters, and NCAA Squad List.

7. Assist with developing and submitting a proposed schedule to Director of Athletics, or designee, for approval. The Assistant Coach should not obligate the University without approval from the Director of Athletics and Head Coach.

8. Assist with organizing and conducting all practices by:
  • Conducting and/or supervising the warm-up, conditioning, and cool-down phases of practice.
  • Talking with trainers before each practice to check on the status of injured players.
  • Scheduling individual practice sessions for players with specific weaknesses.
  • Scheduling video review sessions with players as needed.


9. Assist with off-season player development by organizing conditioning and weight-training program in consultation with the trainers and weight coaches.

10. Coordinate mailings to alumni and other supporters including the start up and building of booster club.

11. Liaison with golf course maintenance staff for short game area and REK.

12. Coordinate and ensure maintenance of Men's Golf Mercedes Sprinter Van.

13. Perform any other duties as may be assigned by supervisor.

Relationships:

Frequent contact with potential recruits to influence, motivate or persuade parties to obtain the desired results.

Occasional contact with alumni, parents and community to exchange factual information and provide explanation of rules, regulations, practices or functions.

Responsibility for Final Decisions:

Tasks involve multiple procedures with interrelated processes or steps. Work involves choosing the appropriate option or procedure to follow and applying established rules and procedures.

Errors are readily detected in the normal course of work by standard check or crosscheck.

Reports To: Head Men's Golf Coach.

Work is performed independently or routine work, non-routine issues or questions are referred to the supervisor.

Education/Skill Requirements:

Bachelor's degree plus two years of experience competing and/or coaching at the college level with collegiate level playing ability required. The successful candidate must possess leadership, role modeling, organizational, and interpersonal skills and must be knowledgeable of NCAA Division I rules and regulations.

Aptitude to assist coach in providing instruction in the skill areas and techniques

necessary to facilitate the development of student athletes in order to reach their potential as students and athletes, and to achieve recognition in intercollegiate golf.

Ability to motivate and communicate effectively with others and to create a supportive learning environment for a diverse population.

Keep abreast of new ideas and techniques in sports field assigned.

Extensive knowledge of all conference and NCAA policies, rules, and regulations and adhere to these policies as they pertain to the duties and responsibilities of the job.

Ability to work effectively with college student athletes, athletic staff, University personnel and Alumni.

Excellent communication and organizational skills.

Ability to provide effective leadership to student athletes to both encourage and motivate successful academic development and competitive performance.

Serves as a role model for the student athletes by exhibiting ethical and professional conduct at all times.

Proficient computer skills including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Suite.

Work Conditions:

Work is performed under usual office or athletic facility conditions requiring basic safety precautions.
