This is a 12-month full-time professional librarian position with faculty rank that provides innovative leadership for technical services and electronic resource management. The Head of Technical Services oversees all aspects of Technical Services, including Acquisitions, Cataloging, Serials, Gifts, Electronic Resources, and Preservation. This position is responsible for Authority Control and administrative duties for the various library softwares (Sierra, CONTENTdm, Syndetics, Summon, Journal Finder, etc.). Essential duties will include: 

  • Oversight of Technical Services, acquisition and ongoing maintenance of electronic resources and library collection development
  • Performing system administration duties for the Integrated Library System (ILS) 
  • Providing reference services 
  • Participation in librarian professional development organizations, college academic activities, and library meetings 
  • Performing or supervising original, complex, and batch cataloging as needed, and supervising routine copy catalog processing in all formats and languages, including with contract services 
  • Oversight for gifts processing, including coordinating with donors, developing procedures and policies, evaluation and disposition of donated materials 
  • Preparing and providing statistical reports for various reporting agencies for annual reports and special projects 
  • Running routine loads of records into the system and providing reports and software updates  
  • Maintaining print and electronic periodical and database information in online services, such as SerialsSolutions and Summon 
  • Training staff on system updates and new features
  • Supervising staff in preparing materials for the bindery and repairing damaged items 
  • Monitoring and advising the Library Dean on budget expenditures for collections and binding 
  • Policy development, implementation and review of procedures 
  • Coordination of technical services projects with other college librarians and staff 
  • Responsibility for technical services processing in the absence of staff, including supervision of student employees 


  • Master’s degree from an ALA accredited institution is required, with a second master’s degree preferred 
  • Three to five years of progressive experience working in an Academic Library setting in a Technical Services department is required
  • Experience with LCC, LCSH, OCLC and MARC21 formats for bibliographic holdings and authority control, and with Integrated Library Systems
