Position Summary:

This position provides professional level support to the centralized Business Services Office (BSO) in the School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM). The School consists of 4 academic departments (basic science and clinical), the University of Wisconsin Veterinary Care (UWVC) teaching hospital, complex animal research and teaching facilities, and several auxiliary and chargeback units supporting research and teaching activities. In FY20, the School expenditures exceeded $70 million and included funds 101, 133, 135, 136,142, 144, 145, 150, 161, 233, and 403.

The Business Services Office is responsible for the accounting, invoicing, financial reporting, purchasing, cash management, payment processing, accounts receivable, travel, and financial training functions for the School of Veterinary Medicine.

This position involves a broad variety of complex fiscal management and accounting activities including: monitoring and coordination of fiscal year-end closing; interpreting fund requirements and deadlines and ensuring expenditures are in line with these requirements; recommending action on various accounting questions; serving as business operations resource for State, University and School policy development, interpretation and implementation. The person in this role will functions independently and performs highly responsible professional accounting functions requiring the knowledge and application of accounting theories and principles for the University of Wisconsin and the SVM.

Successful performance of responsibilities requires knowledge of School, University and State purchasing and accounting policies and procedures, as well as all granting agency guidelines and regulations. Duties are performed under general supervision.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance is preferred.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

2 years of experience in academic accounting and purchasing in a higher ed institution is strongly preferred.

General knowledge of University, State, Federal and/or non-federal government accounting.

Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills.

Ability to independently determine priorities and to interpret and analyze financial data.

Ability to interpret policies and regulations and apply them to practical situations.

Ability to exercise good judgment, recognizing where deviation from standard policies or processes may be needed.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and work with individuals of different backgrounds and financial literacy.

High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.

Strong working knowledge of computer applications and willingness to learn and adapt to new systems.

Knowledge of University's Shared Financial System and WISER electronic reporting system.

Ability to multi-task to support multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
