The COVID -19 pandemic has necessitated a surveillance and screening program to contribute to the public health and well-being of both the NIU campus and the surrounding communities. The COVID -19 / SARS -CoV-2 surveillance testing program at Northern Illinois University seeks a Research Associate to serve as a Wastewater Surveillance Testing Technician to contribute to the NIU campus program for SARS -CoV-2 monitoring. The Research Associate will work as part of a campus team and report to the Director of COVID -19 Facilities. This position is part of an NIU campus-community partnership with the Kishwaukee Water Reclamation District and is designed to support the emerging campus mission and university contribution to community health surveillance during the global COVID -19 pandemic.
Duties and Responsibilities (generally)
Process wastewater samples, analyze processed samples, engage in process development, design and execute experiments, analyze data, draw scientific conclusions from data produced, and convey that information to the supervisor and research colleagues.
Operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
Ensures lab work is executed under biosafety level 2 guidelines and SOPs
Maintains records of all samples, experimental procedures and data
Manages the supplies and their acquisition for the operation of the laboratory
Mediates hazardous waste disposal and laboratory decontamination
Minimum Required Qualifications for this position
Bachelors degree in biology or a closely related field;
Laboratory research experience
Specialty Factors (Additional Required Qualifications)
Education and Experience Preferred
Masters degree in biological sciences or a closely related field;
Laboratory research experience with molecular biology and the polymerase chain reaction ( PCR )

This position requires a detail-oriented person who possesses excellent quantitative, organizational, oral and written communication skills; likewise, the ability to work autonomously [under direction] and as part of a team. Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills is also essential.
Familiarity and experience with computer programs such as the Microsoft Office suite is also required.

Research associate will be required to transport and process wastewater samples from the Kishwaukee Water Reclamation District. Strength (the ability to lift up to 30 lbs) and dexterity for lab techniques with repetitive fine motor skills (pipetting small volumes accurately) are required for this position.
