Mission or Goal of Unit

The mission of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry is the advancement of science through research and the training of undergraduate, professional and graduate students in our discipline. The Department fosters a level of research and professional activity essential to the graduate program (M.S. and Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences) and to the professional growth of the faculty. The Department provides Pharm.D. and graduate students with courses and research experiences that prepare them for their professional careers. It also provides service courses to other programs that require a medicinal chemistry foundation, and to other VCU students who wish to become more scientifically knowledgeable. The Department is committed to enhance diversity among its faculty, staff, and students. Finally, Department faculty members have a responsibility to provide service to their profession and to t university community.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

The VCU School of Pharmacy, Department of Medicinal Chemistry, invites you apply for two immediate openings for full-time 12- month tenure-eligible teaching and research faculty positions at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor.

This position is a partnership between the Medicinal Chemistry Department and the VCU Massey Cancer Center – an NCI designated Cancer Center. The candidates are expected to maintain a funded, nationally recognized research program in Cancer Drug Discovery with emphasis on either Bioorganic Medicinal Chemistry or X-ray Crystallography. Experience in structure-based drug design is highly desirable, and preference will be given to candidates with a track record in collaborating with teams of chemists, structural biologists, systems and/or cell biologists working in areas related to cancer.

Position Responsibilities

The successful candidates will demonstrate research productivity that complements and expands existing research programs in the department of Medicinal Chemistry and the Massey Cancer Center, and possess a passion for intramural and extramural collaboration. Assistant Professor candidates must have significant postdoctoral or previous academic research experience with excellence in scholarship and strong potential for extramural funding. Associate Professor candidates must have a well-developed scholarly/research portfolio with evidence of success in a multi-disciplinary environment and a track record of external funding. Full Professor candidates must have a nationally recognized scholarly/research portfolio with a track-record of success in a multi-disciplinary environment and a strong record of continuous peer-reviewed external funding. Successful candidates should have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member, contribute to high-impact teaching in the School’s graduate and professional degree programs and provide service to the School and the University.

Teaching:
Faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in the areas of medicinal chemistry at the undergraduate, professional (Pharm.D.) and graduate levels. Possible course assignments may include but are not limited to: lectures in MEDC310 (Medicinal Chemistry and Drug Design), selected lectures in various courses in the Pharm.D. curriculum, e.g., the Pharmacotherapy sequence and other graduate courses as needed. In addition, faculty will mentor research projects of undergraduate and graduate students who are registered for MEDC697.

Research:
Faculty member must continue or establish a nationally recognized research program with a record of publication in refereed journals and external funding. The successful applicant is expected to develop interdisciplinary collaborations to enhance the research program in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery/design at VCU, and in addition, will mentor professional and graduate students in his/her research laboratory.

Service:
Faculty member will serve on Departmental, School, and/or University committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field, e.g., reviewer, conference organizer, etc.

Required Qualifications

- Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in Medicinal Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Structural Biology, or a related field
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
- Experience in structure-based drug design is highly desirable, and preference will be given to candidates with a track record in collaborating with teams of chemists, structural biologists, systems and/or cell biologists working in areas related to cancer
