Assessing the needs of eligible clients as they present and
determining the best course of care for that individual;
• Providing evaluations for students who are referred to the center
for alcohol or drug abuse;
• Providing safety and risk assessments for students in crisis or
students referred for unsafe behaviors;
• Referring clients who exceed the scope of service of campus
counseling and wellness services to appropriate disposition in the
community;
• Managing clients of concern to insure adequate disposition;
• Brief counseling of eligible clients, in either group or
individual treatment, to facilitate understanding of personal or
interactive issues, to define goals and to develop realistic action
plans;
• Analyzing data such as interview notes and test results to
identify symptoms and diagnose the nature of the clients'
issues;
• Educating clients on the potential benefits of group or
individual therapy and making referrals to other institutions for
non-counseling issues;
• Consulting with other professionals to discuss therapy or other
resources; and
• Providing crisis intervention to the Husson community.
Outreach and Special Interest: Each counselor is encouraged to engage in community outreach to both assist in the delivery of health care information to the Husson community as well as to increase the visibility of the Counseling Services Center across campus.
Each counselor is encouraged to develop an area/areas of specific interest in topics related to the well-being of University students and the University environment.
QUALIFICATIONS

Qualification and Experience Requirements
• Current, in-depth knowledge of his/her field and its standards of
practice;
• Commitment to the practice of quality mental health services,
including a commitment to human value in that practice;
• Special interest and experience working in a University
setting;
• Awareness of the human developmental processes which occur during
college years (undergraduate and graduate);
• Ability to work with other professional staff and support staff
to produce integrated professional services;
• Ability to use peer supervision appropriately and modify
treatment interventions and interpersonal strategies based on
feedback from peers;
• Excellent written and verbal communication, organizational skills
and an ability to provide outreach and training to groups of
people;
• Ability to work independently when necessary and self-direct in
order to develop and administer programming;
• Ability to respond to crises independently;
• Possession of an understanding of issues of diversity with
demonstrated leadership and effectiveness in promoting respect and
appreciation for diversity and pluralism among students and staff;
and
• Ability to utilize technology in the delivery of student
program.
Minimum of Master's Degree in Counseling, Counseling Psychology,
Marriage and Family Therapy, Psychology, or Social Work (e.g. LCSW,
LCPC, LMFT, Psychologist) with licensure, doctorate
preferred
• Licensable in Maine
Experience:
• Minimum two years counseling experience, preferred with
college-aged students.
• Experience in a college or university counseling center setting
preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities:
• Familiarity with adolescent and adult mental health care
preferred.
