Overview

Employment Status: Full-time, Probationary, "Exempt" position.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday from 8:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M. Some early morning, evening or weekend hours may be required, as needed to travel, participate in program events/activities.

Position Overview:
Under general direction, the Student Services Professional III performs complex Student Services professional work characterized by independent student advisement and guidance in individual and group settings. Such advisement involves basic counseling techniques and may concern career, academic, learning, campus life and/or related issues. Incumbents in this classification spend substantial portions of time in advisement sessions of considerable duration and utilize skills usually gained in graduate courses in counseling and guidance, human relations or related fields. This level is further characterized by assignments requiring the application of a high degree of judgment, or persuasiveness, imagination and professional skills and knowledge in a specified program or service area, as well as a general understanding of the interrelationships and the need for coordinated action within the total Student Services program. This level requires considerable administrative planning to develop creative solutions which integrate approaches across organizational lines. At this level, there is also the responsibility for recognizing specific program needs and for developing approaches for possible implementation to meet these needs.

Typical Activities

Typical duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

Under the general supervision of the assistant director of the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), the EOP Counselor will provide comprehensive support services to a diverse student population including pre-admission advising, orientation, academic advising, personal and career counseling and financial aid guidance.
  • Counsel students in regards to academic progress and be proactive in providing interventions and making appropriate referrals to campus resources.
  • Assists in various aspects of EOP student admissions including, but not limited to, outreach presentations and review of EOP applicant information for selection of EOP student cohorts.
  • Reviews potential students transcripts, test scores, CSU eligibility index, recommendation letters and autobiographical information.
  • Represents California State University San Bernardino at off-campus/on-campus EOP events.
  • Works collaboratively with area high schools and community colleges, and assists in attracting a diverse undergraduate student population.
  • Advises and counsels current and prospective EOP students and their families/guardians on general CSU and specific admissions and other university policies and requirements.
  • Provides EOP and university information to faculty, community colleges, high schools and community groups.
  • Works collaboratively with college, department-based professional and faculty advisors to achieve graduation and retention goals.
  • EOP student services include general education, and educational planning in partnership with major academic advisor, undeclared advising, developmental progress monitoring and probation/disqualification, and appropriate referral to other academic support offices.
  • Utilizes effective counseling techniques to assist students with sensitive issues pertaining to their personal and academic needs that impact their academic success. The incumbent will be responsible for assisting in coordinating workshops (academic & personal enhancement workshops) that will support students in meeting their academic and personal potential.
  • The incumbent also serves on university-wide committees.
  • Responsible for the planning, coordination and implementation of the EOP Summer Bridge program. Some of these duties include assisting with the negotiation of contractual understandings and agreements, recruitment of Summer Bridge staff, developing summer activities, establishment of summer program admission procedures, staff training, and ensuring program compliance with established goals and objectives.
  • Responsible for collecting, organizing, creating and submitting quarterly and/or annual reports summarizing efforts that include data and recommendations and any other ad hoc reports requested by EOP Assistant Director and EOP Director.
  • Will be relied upon to provide insight, direction and recommendations to unique and sometimes sensitive issues, and is expected to independently and collaboratively resolve complex problems through the use of highly effective communication skills.
  • The EOP Counselor is considered a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:
  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.
  • Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three (3) years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • A Master's degree is desired. A Master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Counseling or Educational Psychology or a directly related field is preferred. A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of professional counseling theories and techniques is preferred.
  • Applicants must have experience in collecting, analyzing and evaluating data, as well as making verbal and written presentations regarding their assessment of the data collected.
  • Experience with EOP, TRIO or coordinating summer student programs is preferred.
  • Experience with higher education academic policies and procedures.
  • Upper division or graduate course work in individual and group counseling, career counseling and conflict resolution is preferred.
  • Knowledge in how to operate standard office equipment and software including PeopleSoft, Microsoft Office (Access, PowerPoint, Excel and Word) and database management.
  • Experience in fundraising, event planning, training is preferred as these are considered specialized skills.
  • Working knowledge or experience in relaying university degree requirements including major and general education coursework and developing educational plans.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate applications and transcripts and acquire knowledge of Transfer Admissions Agreements.
  • General Knowledge of counseling techniques and counseling theory.
  • Ability to formulate and recommend solutions to unique situations and problems using good judgment.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
  • Knowledge of or the ability to learn non-resident policies and resources for AB540, undocumented and DACA students.
  • Committed to acquiring knowledge of accommodation resources available to students to ensure equal access to learning.
  • Collaborate and maintain effective working relationships with various departments/units and community partners.
  • Ability to advise students individually or in groups on varied and complex matters.
  • Ability to determine the appropriate course of action and proper techniques to utilizewhile engaged with individuals and groups in personal interactions of a sensitive nature.
  • Ability to design and conduct workshops/presentations.
  • Ability to perform in a detail oriented environment.
  • Ability to handle multiple work priorities, organize work projects and complete in a timely manner.
  • Strong oral and communication skills.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU.
