This position is assigned to the Advanced Materials Processing Consortium (AMPC) operated under the Energetics Research Group of the Whiting School of Engineering. AMPC is a newly formed research initiative focused on hypersonic materials development, processing and characterization, and conducts independent research, technical analysis and studies as part of funded programs from the United States DoD and NASA.

This position supports the AMPC program on carbon-carbon composites processing, currently sponsored by the Department of Defense through the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory.

The Assistant Research Engineer is an entry level position, and will report directly to the Principal Investigator on the carbon-carbon composites program.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Perform internal and external research, analysis and studies in carbon-carbon composites processing and related fields for rocket, space and missile systems.

  • Utilize internal research resources as well as numerous outside sources to support project requirements.
  • Perform synthesis operations associated with carbon-carbon composites processing.
  • Coordinate data collection associated with processing and characterization of composites.
  • Participate in project team meetings and assist in preparation of reports to sponsor.
  • Support and co-author internal technical reports, final research reports and technical papers.
  • Participate in development of follow-on strategic initiatives related to carbon-carbon composites processing.

Successful performance of these duties will require coordination and interaction with internal technical and operational team members, and potentially with US Government sponsors.

Areas of technical interest should include (but are not limited to): materials processing, composite materials, carbon chemistry, phase transformations, fluid flow, diffusion phenomena, environmentally-conscious and sustainable processing methods.

Posted Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Masters Degree.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering, Materials Science or related area of study strongly preferred.

Special Skills and Knowledge:

  • Must possess good verbal and written communication skills, with ability to craft reports and papers, and present to internal audience; a capacity to learn and implement specialized materials processing techniques associated with composites fabrication.
  • Knowledge and training in materials testing and characterization, and/or materials processing methods.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office suite required.

Additional information:U.S. citizenship required. This position will work in the Columbia, MD area.

Long term availability of this position will be contingent upon award and follow-on funding.
