General Summary/Purpose:

Working in the Division of Cardiology at the Green Spring outpatient location, this positionsupports Cardiologists with their outpatient clinical duties. The incumbentis accountable for the delivery of comprehensive care, in collaboration with the provider and other members of the health care team, to the client population through assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation; this role helps foster an environment that optimizes client well-being and outcomes.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

    Reviews physician EPIC-in-baskets on a daily basis, triaging appropriately. Pends new medications and prescription refills in Epic for physician signature. Assists with ordering patient lab and studytests as needed, and routing orders in EPIC to physicians for their co-signature. Works with cardiology scheduling team to help schedule tests as needed. Assists in completion of prior authorizations. Follows up on lab and studytestresults, notifying the physician and patient as appropriate. Returns patient phone calls and responds to appropriate Epic in-basket questions. Prepares physicians for outpatient clinic appointments including obtaining detailed medical records for patients with complex medical histories and ensuring records are scanned into Epic. Populates patient history in EPIC prior to appointments. Generates patient problem lists as requested by physicians. Is aware of the inclusion/exclusion criteria for ongoing clinical trials to help identify possible research candidates. In some circumstances, the RN will also attend clinic with physicians, obtain/update history and interim concerns from patients, and help document patient clinic encounters in EPIC. Practices nursing per clinical protocols and under the nursing scope of practice for the State of Maryland. May perform case management services to patients from initial intake visit through termination of services. Assists in the development/updating of unit based protocols, standardized care maps and/or care plans.

    Knows the key formal and informal goals of the division and the clinic team and asks for guidance appropriately. Uses own judgmentinachieving goals of good clinic practices, good documentation, and interactions with staff and health care professionals.

Decision Making:

    On a regular and consistent basis, exercises excellent clinical and administrative judgment and assumes responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results having an impact on people in the workplace and potential or actual research subjects. Uses judgment to maintain and improve the quality of service within the program. Exercises mature judgment and remains flexible in stressful situations.

Communication:

    Requires good oral and written communicationskills. Has excellent interpersonal skills. Must have the ability to inter act with individuals at a variety of ages and levels.

Minimum Qualifications:

    Registered Nurse within the State of Maryland required. Baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited School of Nursing preferred. At least one year working in a Cardiology environment preferred.

Certification:

    Current CPR certification.Ifnotcertified currently, will need to complete certification withinsixty(60) days of hire.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Ability to analyze data to synthesize and summarize information and to make judgments regarding patient care. Ability to use a computer keyboard to input and obtain data. Ability to apply principles of evidenced-based practice, scientific process, and service excellence in practice.
Any Specific Physical Requirements for the Job:

    Ability to stand and walk for extended periods. Ability to reach for, push, pull, and/or lift patients and equipment with little likelihood of injury. Ability to sit inanormal seated position for extended periodsof time. Finger dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm, for example using a keyboard. Ability toseewithinnormal parameters, to hear within normal ranges, and ability to move about.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
