General Summary:

Designs, develops, and maintains web/database systems for researchers in the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center. Develops and implements new database applications. Responsible for the full software lifecycle of applications built, including prototyping, development and deployment. Develops and implements new user interfaces and multimedia content.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plans and develops site development and web-based database applications.
  • Meets with technical and non-technical staff members and faculty.
  • Analyzes technical and business problems and translates business requirements into functional/technical specifications.
  • Builds web applications used in the data collection and analysis of clinical research.
  • Designs and deploys new database driven web pages.
  • Researches and evaluates web/online technologies for inclusion into web sites and services.
  • Create and maintain complex and interrelated database tables which may contain sensitive and/or HIPAA-related data.
  • Analyze and monitor databases and websites to identify problems or difficulties for end users.
  • Trains faculty and staff on new systems.
  • Implements new and dynamic site features and multimedia, retrieving content from files systems and database systems, and updating these same database systems.
  • Manages projects simultaneously while meeting tight deadlines.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • Required: BS/BA degree in Computer Science.

Preferred Experience:

  • Minimum of 1 year experience in design and creation of web/database applications. Additional experience may substitute for some education to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Special Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities /Competencies:

  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, both development and maintenance.
  • Must possess strong communication and client interaction skills.
  • Must be able to document concise, well-defined written job specifications of work to be performed
  • Solid knowledge of SQL, and proven ability to create and maintain ER diagrams, database tables, constraints, relationships and indexes
  • Competent in creation of web-ready graphic images, animation, PDF documents, and multimedia files.
  • Extensive knowledge of web site design tools, such as ColdFusion, Flex, JQuery, design software such as Adobe Photoshop, Fireworks, and Illustrator, and other tools as needed
  • Proven ability to translate creative web concepts into very clean and organized web applications
  • Knowledge resolving web site usability issues and working knowledge of current web design best practices.
  • Proven ability to create complex tables, build frames, and work with HTML forms
  • Excellent understanding of the HTTP protocol
  • Write solid, maintainable code that can be reused and is documented
  • Understanding of relational database technology and concepts
  • Must have ability to manage multi-project workload.
  • Must have excellent problem solving, written, and oral communication skills.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
